you guys ar ekilling this topic. like a bunch of old women standing around a piece of buttered bread, butter side down, laying on the floor, all setting there ringing their hands and grousinge about how best to pick it up.

If the way you worry about this is any indication how you go thru and handle situations in the rest of your life. I fell for you... i really do.

weld it.. or if loosing serious sleep over it.. scrap it and make a fire ring out of it and replace the derned thing. my 31yr old blind horse could have handled this 'problem' by now.

:(

good grief...

gobal intelegence level is at a static point, yet population is continually growing... UGH!

Makes me wonder how some people get anything done. Just fix it:laughing:

the time some of these guys spent wringing their hands and wiping nervous sweat off their brow discussing the strategic planning of this event I coulda dismounted the tire.. cleaned and welded it and ground the weld flush, wiped some acetone across the area, shot it with some seal all... and then remounted the tire, aired up.. tossed in the horse trough to look for bubbles, then been well on the way to putting lug nuts back on....

I'd hate to see a -real- problem crop up here. ;) .. it might NEVER get fixed... just stay in planning phase and continual discussion ...

Dude, he said he was going to tube it

Didn't read the whole thread, but - tube or not would make no difference if the rim gave way quickly. Bad things happen then.

The odds of the weld giving way - who knows. Lot of welded rims out there, guess it works most of the time.

Would depend on the location of the crack and all as to whether I would risk it, but there _certainly_ is some risk on doing this.

Just like talking about a battery blowing up - it doesn't sound like a big deal, until it happens to you. Then it's something you never forget.... I'll never forget that experience!

When a tire blows up big time from a rim failure, it's something you will remember the rest of your life - however long that may be.....

Whatever you do MMH, after you weld it up and if you use ether to reseat it dont mention it on here or it might start a free for all:D

one of the antique tractor mags I read just did an article on sectioning a rim. IE.. cutting a piece out of another and welding it in as a patch. something most antique tractor owners have done many times.

I'm sure that would make some here in this thread faint clutch their chest or wet their panties...

Just to get my unqualified 2 cents in here, I would weld it and I would not tube it. I have welded up a couple of air compressors and they seemed fine, and that was with an old AC stick welder, I could do a heck of a lot better job now, And they are holding 130 lbs not 20 to 30. Weld up that puppy, and be done with it. I think the diesel mist leak check is probably a good idea. I think when you get it apart you will find the inside is rusted all to heck however in that spot,.. might take some real grinding and cleaning to get solid metal you can weld up. Good luck with it.

Welding a pressure that has corroded enough to leak? Ever heard tell of the military , aviation industry, state and Federal land and marine transportation laws. Then business and industry in general? How long would it take for you get fired for putting a defective pressure vessel back in service. Know anybody that is a paramedic, ER room staff, fireman or cop? Ever see the aftermath of a ruptured pressurized gas vessel. Ask them. If you were not blindly ignorant of the facts or so in love with money to cheap out on such a repair. You would Never consider maiming or killing somebody that has family and a litigation lawyer.

Can you quote us what the military, aviation, state, federal and marine agencies specifically say about welding a cracked tractor rim being welded up in a barn on private property. There's probably a lot of literature on the matter but I would like to hear it From you. Thank you

i doubt you will find any govt document telling you you can't weld up an old tractor rim and then run it around your yard. if there is.. it's in one of the 'nanny' places where you can't drink sugary drinks probably.. ;)

I really think there's alot of hullabaloo about nothing here. if this were a road vehicle like an auto..... I'd say no repair on rims. if this were a super high volume and pressure container.. like a compression tank.. or even a split rim.. I'd probably avoid it too.

it's neither of these.

no more pressure or danger involved than a regular tire blowing out... catastrophic bead of rim seperation form a 1" crack being welded? please.. probably have more chance to get hit by lightning or a piece of space juk.. and you can't do much about those!

:)

keep in mind the varried membership here.

those that worry about everything...

those that might have seen or heard of some very rare issue.. and are frightened by it.

those that realize that just getting up in the morning has risks..

those that , as a part of their life take measured risks every day..

those that have BTDT, and got the dirty coverals and gloves from doing this kind of stuff vs talking about it with armchair consultants that post on internet forums about things they've never done..

and still more.

:)

just sayin.. :)

I think I'm gonna go out and weld on a rim.. just because. I'm feelin lucky today.. :)
