Welding Up a Cracked Rim

One way to insure the weld is airtight is to apply some Locktite thread locker 290 to the weld. Its capillary action seals any porosity in the weld. This can be used for welding fuel tanks, hydraulic tanks etc. Loctite Threadlocker Green 290 from Loctite Adhesives I have used this on welded tanks and it works great or my welds were that good :confused3:

Thanks, its how they did it many years ago on steam engines before there where dyes and chemicals. Still works today.

I'm familiar w/ all sorts of weld specs & weld inspection specs (UP, PT, MT, VT, ad nauseum...) from a NAVSEA world. Never researched 'home' versions of these inspections. Thanks again...

Ever look at the time line when the cracked weld info was divulged? Early on it sounded like another Bubba that rarely drained the air receiver. After the tank bottom was corroded thin, Bubba starts welding the pin holes.
Or is Bubba welding a corroded, thinned out air pressure tank not a problem?

Maybe you should have asked "Bubba" instead of just assuming:confused2:

And even so. If the air tank is already THAT bad, it is unsafe BEFORE "Bubba" starts welding. So what welding he does do, aint gonna make or brake it.

I have welded up many rims with good results.......thats assuming that the crack is beside the bead of the tire....if it makes you feel better you can weld on some chunks of angle iron to make it some stromger.......of course you have to remove the tire first...........if you are a real good welder it may run tubeless

I wonder how much vibration it "would" have at freeway speed when it is on the trailer and not spinning:laughing:

nd I wonder how much freewy speed ( 45-55mph? ) a tractor tire is gonna see. any partial ounce weld on a rim is likely not gonna be noticeable on a big tractor tire that may have it own knots and bits of lost tread here and there.. or ballast.. plugs.. etc.

i don't think it's the hayseeds making the problem. the hayseeds ar ethe ones that will just dismount it.. weld it, remount and finish working.

it's the arm chair hand wringers mostly..

If indeed it really is an OSHA violation, and we all know OSHA knows all :confused2:,
and if it fails and causes damage and if you tell the world you did it
in a forum your chances of being sue'd, and loosin, are great. Heck if
ANYTHING goes wrong a good (?) attorney could spin your weld into
the reason why the axle broke, which in turn caused the tractor to veer
into your neighbors prized tomata patch doin' 10's of thousands of dollars of damage!

I'M STILL ALIVE!!! One week after the rim weld repair, it still has not exploded. I'm still not brave enough to drive it to school and risk having it explode there killing hundreds of chitlins in the process...
