Welding Up a Cracked Rim

Different story now with the details you repaired an inferior weld. It wasn't a case of welding a thinned out corroded tank bottom. Should be a perfectly acceptable repair.

SO let me get this straight, You went off the deep end about not welding on pressure vessels, and gave all of us the third degree about how unsafe it is, and ALL of this was based on what you ASSUMED and did NOT know:confused2:

My biggest concern would be balance. I'd be afraid that because of the extra weight of the welded area, you will end up with a shimmy at freeway speeds. Please have the wheel / tire assembly spin balanced after the repair ...... and be prepared to add plenty of wheel weights opposite the repair. Good luck !

Thats too funny.

I wonder how much vibration it "would" have at freeway speed when it is on the trailer and not spinning:laughing:

I deal with inspections on boilers and ressurized piping as a ASME inspector and after the final weld blending, we perfrom NDE, mostly dye penetrant in an effort to find cracks that are not clearly visible to the eye.
In this case I would certianly do a PT check before pressurizing it. A cheap method is to use some light machine oil, like a 5 weight or less, thoroghly soak the area as well as the HAZ adjacent to the weld, and let it soak in the oil for about 10-15 minutes after brushing it on. Then wipe off the excess oil with a clean rag, apply some alcohol to the rag but don't saturate it,then wipe the area again. give it five minutes to air dry, then sprinkle some talcum powder very lighly over the repair area.
The talcum powder will draw the oil out of any fine cracks and will be clearly visible to the eye after a few minutes,or if its bad enough, the powder will stick to the area with the indication.

Cheap but effective and will give ya peace of mind.
Great instruction on a home PT test! Don't think that most of my welds would pass!

I did weld the rim. Sorry no pictures - too much of a hurry to get it done.

This thread was informative & entertaining! I never thought that welding on a rim would be so controversial.

One way to insure the weld is airtight is to apply some Locktite thread locker 290 to the weld. Its capillary action seals any porosity in the weld. This can be used for welding fuel tanks, hydraulic tanks etc. Loctite Threadlocker Green 290 from Loctite Adhesives I have used this on welded tanks and it works great or my welds were that good :confused3:

Bunch of hayseed tractor drivers can make a big deal out of anything. Legend in their own minds

Ever look at the time line when the cracked weld info was divulged? Early on it sounded like another Bubba that rarely drained the air receiver. After the tank bottom was corroded thin, Bubba starts welding the pin holes.
Or is Bubba welding a corroded, thinned out air pressure tank not a problem?

Thanks, its how they did it many years ago on steam engines before there where dyes and chemicals. Still works today.
