Randy, Did you actually read my post before responding? Why are you going on about world wide climate change when I never mentioned climate in my post? I said, "man has had a detrimental effect on the natural environment." Do you disagree with that? Would you argue that pollution is a benefit not a harm?

Lets not confuse being southern with being ignorant as they are not even close to being the same things. I come from many generations of southerners. My Scotch Presbyterian ancestors (Ulster Scots) ,after several generations in Ireland, came from Ireland and landed in South Carolina before the revolutionary war and fought against the English. They moved to Georgia when it opened for white settlers and then to Alabama and Mississippi. I have two Confederate cavalrymen as direct ancestors. How much further south can you claim and be in the USA?

What is all this ice age warming melting stuff you are writing about? Is it somehow supposed to relate to my post? If yes, then how???

Your response seems like a knee jerk reaction, a tape recording played irrespective of appropriateness whenever someone pulls your string. Please point out what part of your post relates to what part of mine. I just don't see the connection.

Egon, you forgot to mention the shark shortage due to overfishing. Oh, and once upon a time there was a US based tuna fleet based in southern California. Larger and more efficient boats went out for longer and longer periods of time and brought back fewer and fewer fish. Regulations to reduce overfishing (and slaughter of innocent porpoise) drove the US based fleets to Mexico where the laws were more relaxed and much more relaxed in enforcement. But even with no regulation to hold you back it is difficult to bring fish back to the cannery when there are so few fish... and so the canneries of San Diego closed down and then later the cannery at Cabo San Lucas in Baja California del Sur Mexico closed down and there is no tuna fleet sailing from there any more. Well, maybe there is some other explanation for the demise of the tuna stocks beside tremendous overfishing, its just that it hasn't been discovered yet.

Won't be the first fishery lost to overfishing!

"The tragedy of the commons" has been around for centuries and has little to do with global warming.
Has anyone observed any beneficial outcome from the discussions here over the long life of this thread? If yes, then please point them out to the rest of us less observant ones.

If anyone has made a significant change in their beliefs/position on the issues due to this thread, please share that.

Pat
Yes, Rob-D has made me look more at PV systems and I will probably be installing one.

I don't think anyone has said man's ability to effect species through contemporary hunting methods was in debate, do you recall such a debate? I don't. The problem is, any species you choose regardless of how great the numbers are, are a tiny, tiny, tiny spec of the environment worldwide.; So while man may well have the ability to hunt such strange creatures as bison, mute swan, and liberals into extinction, his ability to do that to the climate over a long period of time, even with nuclear weapons, is severely limited.Any more cutesie little animal stories? I love cutesie little animal stories!

Have you read Farmer Browns Son??

Now lets talk about acidification. Uh, that's when the PH drops from what we might think of as normal!

And then consider the cutsie little humans who ain't got their regular three squares!:confused3:;) cause the stuff they eat don't grow/live no more!

Your thought on Nuclear Weapons is interesting: Maybe a misconception.:dance1:

As for "life forms" changing the world so man could exist, who changed the world so they could exist to change the world so man could exist?

Ah; a Philospher in the making! Check it out and tell us. It may be a first for all of us.:confused3::rolleyes:

The answere might be in writein on the back of a pie plate. Probably real easy to read too!;)

Just remember to do it in private cause your trousers will probably slip down a little; embarrassing in public!

Are you really having trouble relating the two posts, really...? Or is that just another attempt at intelligent condescension that some groups feel is not only their birthright but their job? Yes, I read your post, and went over it again, the intent of it appeared quite clear, as does the latter one. What the h3ll is all the rant about being southern and Robert E. Lee's offspring got to do with it, or is that just some more mud for the water? My parents are from Alabama, I'm also of Scottish as well as Cherokee decent, born and raised in NC. Not really sure how one out southerns another, but whatever on that count.

You would be surprised at the depth of study I've done on biology, but I digress....

You liberal/warmer, ecology overseers or whatever you prefer really seem to feel condescension is somehow inflationary to your predisposition to narcissism, I agree!:D:thumbsup:

I suspect that Egon is referring to the theory that early life forms were responsible for changing the atmosphere by generating free O2 such that later oxygen-requiring life forms evolved. Aside from the religious connections, I don't know that there is a conservative vs liberal view on that theory. Care to create one?

The more general application to the current argument would be to point out the obvious: Mankind certainly can and does influence the environment, and by extension, the climate. The extent of the influence is open to debate. The existence of the influence is, as opposed to dear old HS's periodic postings, settled science.

I come back to this Never-Ending-Story periodically to make sure nothing has changed but the characters....and even the characters sometimes come back to life like those in the Young and the Restless. I keep waiting for Victor to marry his own great grandmother and beget his father, but they might be saving that for the last episode.

Chuck
Having been a biology minor, I kinda got that, my question remains germane.
