I think I've finally found the paint I'm going to use for the distributor and carburetor bodies. It's high-heat paint, but judging by pictures I've found online where people have used this paint, the color is exactly what I'm looking for. In fact, I may change my mind and paint the intake/exhaust manifold the same color, thus killing two birds with the same stone. I would have to cure (bake) that paint at much lower temperatures on the distributor and carburetor bodies, but that wouldn't present any problems.

I used the same paint on mine some time ago, it covers well and has proven to be very durable.

I've changed my mind about the paint I'm going to use on the distributor and carburetor bodies. Today, I came across a paint called Aluma Blast by Eastwood. It has very good reviews, and the look of new cast aluminum is precisely what I'm wanting, so I'm going to give it a try. It's acrylic laquer so I'll have to be careful while covering the enamel primer, but as long as the enamel is fully cured and I apply thin coats, everything should be fine.

However, I still plan to buy some of the VHT paint for use on my manifold and exhaust pipe.

I'll be interested to hear your impressions, might want to get a litre myself for future projects.

From what I can tell, it appears to be the best stuff on the market, and seems to come closer to replicating the looks of cast aluminum than anything else. I just ordered a can and will be certain to post my impressions along with pictures after I've used it. In addition to spray cans, they also have it available in quarts, but I'm not certain if other sizes are available.

I saw that, I think I'd prefer that over the spray can if it turns out to be an impressive product.

After further investigation, it appears that the Eastwood Aluma Blast paint may have been recently reformulated, and as a result may not be gasoline resistant, or at least that's what I've read. It's a shame because the stuff looks really good in the pictures I've seen online. I've decided to attempt to cancel my order until I have a chance to learn more about it.

While reading about the Eastwood product, I came across mention of another spray paint called Alumi Blast (Alumi rather than Aluma) by Seymour which is acrylic enamel and is supposed to be gasoline resistant, as opposed to the Eastwood Aluma Blast paint which is laquer enamel and may or may not be gasoline resistant.

I also read that Krylon Dull Aluminum paint is acrylic enamel and is supposed to look almost identical to the Eastwood Aluma Blast paint, but you can't always trust what you read on the internet. Geesh, all I want is some decent looking dull aluminum paint that is both durable and long-lasting. I really miss the days when good spray paint was cheap and easy to find. :confused2:

Shouldn't be that hard should it.

Originally, I thought it would be easy to find good aluminum paint in rattle cans, but it doesn't seem to be that easy, at least not since the EPA screwed up all the formulations.

I wouldn't be concerned if I were using my spray gun for the small stuff because I could go to my local paint supplier and have good automotive paint mixed in just about any color I want, but I hate to spend that kind of money to only paint a distributor and carburetor when a simple rattle can will do. Since the distributor and carburetor must be painted before reassembly and installation, I'd like to be certain the paint is good so I don't have to go through it all again, been there and done that.

Thankfully, when the time comes to paint the tractor body and sheetmetal, I plan to use my spray gun, thus eliminating the "rattle can" problem.

After getting the runaround, I finally got a straight answer from Eastwood about their Aluma Blast spray paint, it's not gasoline resistant so it will be of no use to me. They even had the nerve to try and sell me clearcoat. Sorry, but I'm not spraying clearcoat on my carburetor and distributor bodies, only to have it yellow over time. Been there, done that.

Now it looks like I'll either be using VHT, Krylon, or Seymour spray paint. Perhaps I'll just get a can of each and be done with it, once and for all. Decisions, decisions.

Today, I made another small discovery about one of the parts I picked up from a local dealer the other day. It turns out that he had ordered the wrong breather hose for one end of the tube which connects the carburetor to the air filter, it's the one with big and little ends.

There are two different types, one for the new-style horizontal air filter (# 513316M1), and one for the old-style vertical air filter (# 194409M1). Mine has the old-style, and he had ordered the new-style. Fortunately, when I called the parts dealer, he said he would see if he can get the right part, plus he would take the incorrect part back.
