My 1978 JD 400 is still running like a striped *** ape. It is a real beast, I hope my new 3320 holds up half as well.
Thanks Eric...I'm taking it in today for repair. I'll let you know the outcome.
.1*All the big box store tractors are what many call low end entery level low priced products.
Most of them are built by MTD or AYP
They may call them different brands and paint em many different colors but underneath that they are all alike
.
The John Deere 100 series tractor mowers are manufactured in the John Deere Power Products facility in Greenville, TN. So, your statement is not true in regards to John Deere 100 series being "all alike" or manufactured by anyone other than John Deere.
Here's a link to a story on the Greenville JD manufacturing facility.
They are still built as a low price entry level unit just as are all the other Big Box Store tractors.

I would make sure to put the synthetic 5/50 oil in it too. If your key broke, something that somebody driving your rider is overtorqing the drive tran. If snow plowing is doing it, I would consider upgrading to the K66.Well here's the outcome....It was the pulley below the transmission fan...not the transmission. That was a relief but I'm still concerned about the blogs I've seen on the k58 tranny. Hopefully it won't fail down the road, but I'm definitely going to cut down on the extent of snow plowing that I do with it.
