My 1978 JD 400 is still running like a striped *** ape. It is a real beast, I hope my new 3320 holds up half as well.

Well here's the outcome....It was the pulley below the transmission fan...not the transmission. That was a relief but I'm still concerned about the blogs I've seen on the k58 tranny. Hopefully it won't fail down the road, but I'm definitely going to cut down on the extent of snow plowing that I do with it.

1*All the big box store tractors are what many call low end entery level low priced products.
Most of them are built by MTD or AYP

They may call them different brands and paint em many different colors but underneath that they are all alike
.

The John Deere 100 series tractor mowers are manufactured in the John Deere Power Products facility in Greenville, TN. So, your statement is not true in regards to John Deere 100 series being "all alike" or manufactured by anyone other than John Deere.

Here's a link to a story on the Greenville JD manufacturing facility.

They are still built as a low price entry level unit just as are all the other Big Box Store tractors.

They are still built as a low price entry level unit just as are all the other Big Box Store tractors.

But they ARE unique to Deere in every way. Yes, an entry level machine is an entry level machine, but they are still built differently and to different standards. They are not the same.

Martian,

Don't waste your time on L Brown he just wants to ridicule any Deere mower product that he can, seems bitter for some reason. He must not like Kubota BXs' very much as it takes three of them to maintain 2.33 acres, you would think a single 1026R could replace the three Kubotas' easily.

Or maybe he is just trying to intimidate the young guys starting out who can't afford three Kubotas' and wants them to know he has them. Any way you slice it it aint good.

My 2007 X320 has served me well (knock on wood). Closing in on 600 hours .... still on original tractor drive belt and second mower drive belt ....... still would be on the first except I misrouted it when I changed out the snowblower the first year I had it. Hope my X320 serves me as well as your 400 has you.

I would make sure to put the synthetic 5/50 oil in it too. If your key broke, something that somebody driving your rider is overtorqing the drive tran. If snow plowing is doing it, I would consider upgrading to the K66.

What were you doing when it failed?

Boy, some of you guys are pretty testy. :mur::p

Just wanted to throw in - comments about still using the original belts. I kept using the original belts on my 180. If it ain't broke... When I brought it in for a fix I couldn't perform myself the dealer said I needed 2 new belts. The difference was night and day. That deck just roared and threw the clippings about a quarter of a mile.
Just isn't something you can pick up on over the years as the degradation in performance is so gradual.
