i hear ya on the budget. I've held off on a tractor project this year for budget reasons too.

Seems prioritising projects based on need and available budget has always been there for me, sometimes means I'm doing what I need to instead of what I'd prefer doing, which of course is directly related to how much fun I'm having. Makes it all that much sweeter when I get there though.:)

While preparing to remove the two cover plates at either side of the differential housing I've ran into a small snag. The screws holding the draft response control quadrant cover plate are stuck.

I've tried using mild heat and penetrating oil, followed by a large phillips screwdriver and/or vise grips, but to no avail. My phillips screwdriver isn't quite large enough so I'm hoping that a larger one might do the trick. If not, I may have to try one of those special extractor sockets designed to grip the outer edge of the screw head.

EDIT: The screws are out. Moments after creating this post, I remembered an old trick for removing stuck phillips head screws which worked like a charm, but more on that later.

I was finally able to get the draft response control quadrant cover plate screws out by using a Phillips head bit, a pair of vise grips, and a hammer. Using this method, I was able to loosen all 4 screws in only a few minutes.

Clamp the vise grips on the Phillips head bit and put the tip of the bit into the screw like you would to turn it with a screwdriver, then tap the end of the bit with a hammer as you apply pressure inward and in the direction necessary to remove the screw, usually counterclockwise. If done properly, the hammer creates rotational force against the screw head, which is effectively applied as if the whole contraption were an impact gun, thus forcing the screw to loosen.

The following is a picture of what I found hiding behind the draft response control quadrant cover plate.

Been a while since the cover was off.

We have an impact tool we use on aircraft for removing fasteners that works as you described, it's really handy when removing leading edges or tertiary structure panels, particularly torque tip screws that always install much easier then they can be removed.

Here are more pictures of my progress as I prepare to change the front transmission seals. The inside of the transmission bell housing was cleaned using WD-40 followed by brake cleaner. The remaining black/brown residue around the edges of the transmission bell housing is gasket shellac used by the factory as a sealer between the engine and transmission.

Note the drastic difference between the before and after pictures.
