JD 4020/4010 Ported Filter Cover T31170 Or L55982 Which Bolt To Use??

I got to thinking after I posted the spec's for the R54750 that this problem had been discussed on another tractor site(YTmag) that I frequent. I just searched that site earlier today and couldn't find the thread but I'll keep trying. I'm a computer dummy so researching for a particular thread isn't my forte'.

Thanks again for all your help. I looked at that site (YT) myself earlier but I did not see where anyone said what specific part number of bolt that they used, or if it was there I missed it. I saw that some were asking what bolt for use with the T31170 ported coverf or use with a 4010 or 4020 (non-powershift), but I did not find any specific answer. What I did see was discussion of taking a longer bolt and cutting the smap ring grove in the proper position with a hack saw, which may be the only answer, but I thought that the was probably a factory JD bolt what would work with the snap ring grove in the proper position. I would rather not have to modify a bolt. I agree there are several bolts that might work, but trying to find someone who has done this who knows which one. Dealer around here does not stock the optional bolts so would have to order them. Just trying to find the right bolt with the snap ring grove in the proper place, but such JD factory bolt may no longer exist. It may have just been easier to try to thread a fitting on the non-ported cover, but I was able to get a ported cover for reasonable price so I bought one, and it did not come with a bolt. Hopefully one of us will come up with the answer and post if for all.

One of the bolts I looked up showed no snap ring groove but utilized a spring to hold filter against it's boss in the trans housing. Don't give up yet. Where did you find the post on YT about cutting a snap ring groove in a longer bolt? Who was the author??????????????????

The guys @ New Ag Talk I was always too cheap to buy a ported cover, just brazed a fitting in the original at the proper angle, using the original bolt.

I have another train of thought for you. You could replace the fitting(parts key # 5) with a tee to attach return hose. That will accomplish almost the same thing,be cheaper and less hassle when changing hyd filter.

A member of YT posted that he used a R65894(one of the bolts I listed spec's for) on a early 4020 and it was the correct length. He stated cutting a snap ring groove at the proper location was a breeze.HTH"s,Jim

A half inch bolt could easily be chucked into a drill press and a hacksaw blade (or two stacked) could be held against it while rotating.

Time to take your filter cover off and remove the bolt. Measure the difference between your cover and the ported cover. You need a bolt this much longer. You also need the snap ring groove to be same amount more than your bolt. Once you know what you need you can compare to the JD part numbers and specs posted.

JD parts list 7 bolts from 5.5" to 11" if the groove is not in the right place you have two options, have a new groove cut or add a spacer to put the washers/spring in the correct location.

Thank you. I can't believe one of those bolts won't work on a 4010/4020 with a ported filter cover.
