Do you have plans to sheath any of the lower part?

Yes, have started doing that this last week. The whole bottom will be enclosed as a regular barn would be. No windows, just the double door in front and an entrance door in the north side wall. Have got most of the south wall framed, should finish that framing tomorrow. I am doing something a little different with it as you might expect. Am using a variation of " book shelve " girts and traditional banding. Than as shown in some of the other interior pictures we will have clear coated cedar on the inside and cedar with battens on the outside. The cedar on the inside will be installed on a forty five degree diagonal, both for looks and added strength.
We also decided to do our own treating of the sill plate and all of the framing for the bottom two feet. This is working well but is adding to the construction time. Am using Tim-bor with my own special mix. Won't be able to prove how it works for a few years, however have seen this work in log home construction with great success.
We do not have any pictures loaded to our web site of this yet. Have not had a rainy day so all the time is being spend on outdoor stuff. Hot, humid and dry but getting done what we can and taking a lot of breaks. Then when I do get in at night and finally eat, am just too wiped out to do web work. When I get some photos up I will update it here as well.
Thanks for asking.

It sounds like it will look really nice. Please post some pics. This should alleviate anyone's structural worries. Sheathing with the cedar will add tremendous strength.

This is turning into a work of art. You might have to change your online name to Michelangelo.

Thanks
104 Degrees here today, but we got the framing on the south wall done.
I should not ***** about the weather, it only makes it a little of a problem for us, we can work around it. Small problem when compared to all the farmers and others that have to rely on the weather for their livings. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

Little too hot to work and also some storms in the area, so time to do updates.
Lin and I were making some good progress on the south wall too.

Below is a picture of the wall framing done and stained.

The next picture shows the cedar that will show to the interior. The second bay is done, the first bay is close to being done.
Outside of that cedar will go a special black paper and than another layer of cedar installed vertical with batten boards.

There are 14 of these bays total, so it will be awhile. Hope you enjoyed the pics.

A work of art!
Mind I ask where are you getting all your cedar from? Do you have your own sawmill?

Wish I did have my own mill. The cedar is grown locally, and we get it from a sawmill in Batesville AR. There are several mills within 50 miles of us, but I like these people. They also produce cedar logs and all the other stuff needed to built log homes. They go under the name of Red River Log Homes.
Thanks for the kind words.

So here's the deal.
This has been reviewed on my web site by thousands from all around the world, no one has had a problem with stressed poles.
It has also been reviewed by some of the best architects in the country, they remarked that it is an amazing build. They loved it, and had no concerns with the design.
So Jim when this comes down in the next wind that blows thru, you will be the first one that I email and tell about it. So I suggest you sit by your computer, as you seem to do, and wait for the crash.

And if these best architects in the country asked a question regarding bracing, would you attack them as you did Jimmy? After all, thousands of random internet people visited your web page, that must make you perfect and anyone who dares show some concern an ignorant idiot.

Seems jerks ripen with age.

Ok you are both entitled to your opinions. But I don't believe I have attacked anyone. If there is a problem, or was, he was the one that came back after it was obvious that there was no need to. I have never called anyone "an ingnorant idiot" , those are your words.
However, if anyone, an architect, inspector or anyone else had an opinion that I was not in agreement with and I didn't voice my side of the disagreement, I wouldn't consider myself much of a person. Could I be the one that is wrong, certainly, have been many times.
Calling me a jerk, REALLY.

Lin and Dave,
Love the barn, awesome detail. Its great to be able to build something the way you want, guess you have to consider the source when it comes to criticism. Keep up the great work.

Well, it was a very hot long summer. Did get some work done on the project, but had to take a lot of breaks too, so lost a lot of hours.
Had some other personal events that also took some of our time as well. We are both now 73 too, and just recently celebrated our 52nd aniversary !!

Here are a couple of pictures of some of our progress. Hope you enjoy looking at them and your comments, as always, will be appreciated.

Exterior of the south wall. Battens are not on yet, need to install soffit and trim before battens.

Soffit boards fitted. Also as you can see, the vent strip has been installed.

Very beautiful piece of art, I agree with one person who said you should send pics to Southern Country Living, it would no doubt get published. I am a few years behind you with good building skills, but not sure I could take on this task by myself. You and your wife should be very proud of what you have accomplished. We just purchased our retirement place (14 ac.) and plan to build a house, a nice barn and a shop for me. I am going to use your pictures to see if I can come up with a similar design and give it a shot. This is exactly the type of barn both of us talk about having, may try and find a set of plans that are close to what you have built to go by when we start next year.
You and your wife are very blessed, but I am sure you know that.

Lin and Dave - I would love to see it in person some day. I don't get through there much, mostly in the late spring headed North to Ozarks to vacation. I am in Crittenden county.
Would like to trade email addresses with you, I don't know how I'ved missed this thread but looking foward to following it from now on. I'll send you a PM.

WOW, that is gorgeous!! Makes me rethink the build I was wanting to do on the family farm in Oregon. Did you mention a website that features your build Dave?

Thanks again for all the kind words. I will try to post some more pictures in the near future. Weather was good again today so got a few hours more done on it. Just got in, sun going down early. Late start beause it was 27 here this morning and these old bones don't move well below 50 degrees.
Also thanks for the info about my ISP, that was nice.

LinandDav The health problem improved or did you have surgery. ?
We had discussed rail fence of cedar . And cannot remember if ever settled that you were interested or not. Pulled some cedar logs from the downed trees and cut to 10' length . and yesterday and today split 8 trees and got 50 rails. Think you needed was around 100 rails should be easy enough with another load of trees.
This coolier temp. makes good working out doors.
Did you get the rain gutter problem solved.?

Barn is looking better all the time.

Met with the surgeon and he wasn't sure that removal would be the way to go at that time. Wanted to see me back again in six weeks, which will be Dec 11th. So still not sure what the outcome will be on that. But the weather has been super, so I have been working on the barn as often as we can. I have been feeling real good. Finally did get the gutters and have them installed. Will post pictures of those soon.
Yes, I am interested in the rail fencing and was waiting to get final word from doctor and get past the section of the barn that we are now working on. Either way I will call you.
