I was down at the road house having a few brews last night when I over heard Bubba the next booth over talking about Amsoil. Bubba's 1st wife's , 2nd cousin's Uncle tried that Amsoil stuff. The engine just blew right up the next day. Nope, I ain't ever using that Amsoil in anything of mine.

Bubba's Canadian cousin heard that story too - scared him so much that he never wanted to ever change the oil in his truck.

Almost true story - mechanic buddy has a 5 y/o F150 at his shop now. Doesn't look like the oil was ever changed.

Probably the fumes from an open bottle of Amsoil got to it ! Now the engine is knocking !

Sum up some people's relatives...... and you still get zero.

 Rgds, D.

I retired from state government. I'll take a minute to describe the states pyramid structure - or the structure of ANY corporation in the country!
We had a Department Director in charge.
Under him/her were a several agencies, with a couple of sections each, with a couple of offices, each with groups of people.
The guy on top is paid the most, and generally, the guy on the bottom is paid the least.
This is a very definite pyramid structure this is NORMAL for business.
Don't confuse business structure with an illegal pyramid scheme - where the only way the people on top make money is from the people on the bottom buying something.

Other oil companies sell through chain stores because it is commodity oil and because the company doesn't have a network of dealers to be loyal to. AMSOIL doesn't sell through chain stores because they have loyalty to their dealer network. WalMart, Pepboys and Autozone have ALL inquired about putting AMSOIL on the shelf at their stores. AMSOIL has turned them all down. The Wal-Mart deal alone was worth nearly $50 million dollars.

AMSOIL chose not to go that route because it would put their dealer network out of business. Once AMSOIL's dealer network is out of business, their remaining outlets (chain stores) would then be able to dictate price. Pretty soon, AMSOIL has to dummy down their product just like every other commodity oil to be able to offer it for the price Wal-Mart (or any other chain store) is willing to pay. If they don't, their retail outlet simply takes them off the shelf and the company goes under.

They know who has kept them in a double digit annual growth pattern for the last decade: their dealer network. They have no intentions of jeopardizing that relationship.

Their business approach makes sense to me Mike.

They seem to be using a bit of a different tactic in Canada. I can find Amsoil on the shelf at Canadian Tire (nation wide chain, can't say I've checked stock outside of Ontario though), and at a regional powersports parts distributor, Royal Distributing.

That said, the retail shelf price here is HIGH. Yeah, it's a Canadian thing. I can do way better here in Ontario as an Amsoil Preferred Customer.

So for somebody here in a hurry, or just has lots of money, they can pick up Amsoil at a Retail outlet.

Some companies will test market products or strategies in Canada, before trying them in the USA. Hyundai set up in Canada first years ago, as a trial run before entering the USA market.

Candian Tire is the exception and the reason AMSOIL decided no more chain stores. There was a loophole in their marketing plan that was closed right after CT became a retail account. They even compenstated Canadian Dealers for loss of income if a CT tire store was in their area. That was back in the early 1980's if I recall.

So, I'm guessing that unless Amsoil signed a 50 year contract with CTC, they can't be that upset with the arrangement.

I really can't see the average CanTire customer doing planned maintenance buying Amsoil off the shelf, the prices are just way too high. For the people with money to burn, well, most of those never work on their own cars.

For the average DIY'er, I can't see CTC taking a big bite out of dealer sales, the price spread is too big. What it does do here is provide an on-the-road top up option. You're towing on vacation and find that you need 3/4 of a liter/quart of ATF - pay the high CTC price, and you are back on your way without diluting your ATF of choice.

I don't buy Amsoil at CTC, but am glad it is stocked there for potential emergencies.

I'd have to check to be sure, but I don't think Royal Distributing was around in the early 80's. CTC is a much older chain (1920's or so).

Why do amsoil salesmen alsways try to re-define the definition of a pyramid scheme. Why do they give the most twisted rants, they they think come across as "smart" analogies, but are really nothing of the sort?

The same reason you do not like Amsoil.
