Compressor Oil

Kohler Engine Company makes & bottles their own oil. . .
Really. You've been to the Kohler refinery? Watched this process happen? (not trying to pick a fight, but I find it hard to believe)

To the original poster, and his original question, I suggest you talk to you local fuel/oil supplier. I bought a 5 gallon pail of Mobil Rarus 427 compressor oil from the local Exxon/Mobil jobber. Think I paid about $45-50 for what will likely be a lifetime supply. The same oil was $7 per quart at a local hardware store.

No I have never been to their actual refinery, but we happen to be a Kohler Expert Dealer in the small engine repair business & have had actual Kohler Reps from the factory visit our dealership & explain how it all works. We have sold their oil for 15+ years. That's what when you look at MSDS sheets you don't see other big name oil companies on there. It's been debated for years but it's true, they do have their own formula & quite an extensive oil analysis test lab. It's an excellent oil.

Single stage or 2 stage?

a couple are single stage. smaller units.. 4g and 30g. my 60g upright i dunno.. have to check. it makes air fast.. might be 2 stage.

but do they actually have their own refinery? there aren't all that many here.

what's their msds say address wise. you see many bottlers.. and FEW refineries. many store brands all point to one of 2-3 addresses...

In a two stage the second stage is always highly supercharged by the 1st stage. The continuous positive pressure of 60PSI min keeps the rings and cyl walls pretty dry of oil. On my Kellogg American, compressor oil is a must.

wow...you used syn oil....LOL...I still use cheap HD/chinafreight and all is fine (no UOA though)...Started at -15F last year too (a little slow)...My compessor is 20+ years old. If it dies, who cares...

my compressors actually get a lil abuse. I rune em a whiel when i get home with whatever lard china packed them with then ai drain and flush the sump.. that gets rid of alot of casting flashing and some wear in metal.. then I put in Ch oil for the smaller units.. but the big one has had syn oil in it. many times i'm getting continous run if painting or sand blasting or running an air tool. for that kind of high duty cycle abuse.. on that setup.. the syn can't hurt.. might help.. and cost for a quart is negligible looking at 5.80 vs 2.80 no biggie.... if it had a 15qt sump.. it might be different.. :)

besides I know this argument you are trying to have with me is a carry-over from another post. I see thru that.. :)

Tractor Supply Store will have the oil...while you're there, check out the new ones!
