i'm inclined to think it would handle it on softer woods like cottonwood, but probably not too good on oak or locust.

I am inclined to think you are probabally right. Years ago, 20" bars were kinda the norm on 50cc saws. And they didnt even have the power that a 346 has. You could run the 36" bar if you wanted. It just wont cut as fast. But it will still cut.

I'm running 18 inch bars on my two 346XP's. I see no reason why you can't run a 20" bar on yours. A narrow kerf bar and low chain should cut fine. Just don't try to make your 346XP act like a 372XP in bigger wood. Let the saw do the cutting and not your muscles.

my buddy also has a silver maple he wants down. not an extremely hard wood either. haven't seen it yet, but they get pretty big at the bottom. hoping 20" will do it...if so, i'll get him to buy the bar and chain as payment for cutting it. he'll get off cheap and i'll have a nice new bar and chain.

What you really should do is have him buy a bigger saw for payment:D

A 20 inch bar should handle a close to a 34 - 36 inch tree. I prefer using a 36 inch bar to cut down trees that big.

yea, it might be too big even for a 20", won't know until i see it. just wanted to see if the 20" was a viable option.

I thought only motor oil chat could get TBN members thumping their chest's like excited primates , and expanding micro diferences to " night and day" anlogies! Wow, the 346xp is a nice three and a half hp cutting tool- that's all. You would think from reading some posts a new 1,000 HP hand tool was just discovered. It's actually one of Husq. smallest saws. It's a good limbing/firewood cuting saw. 14.7k rpm whatever, is bs talk for cutting. It has no torque to do work at that RPM so that's meaningless other than than the fact that it can mechanically survive that no-load rpm rating. Bury it in wood and the rpm's drop like a sinker to an rpm where the torque is in seroius decline. That's why they make the bigger saws

The saw does just what it is supposed to do, that is cut wood at high rpm's. Any saw when pushed will slow down. Let this little saw cut the way it is supposed to and it will do just fine. Most of us have a bigger saw for cutting bigger trees.

i don't recall seeing much bragging going on here...thought it was just a discussion about the saw and what we do with it. i'm happy w/ it, and so far it cuts everything i need it to with ease. now that i've eyed some bigger trees i'd like to drop, was just inquiring what ppl have done w/ theirs and what it may be capable of.
