Buying Advice Trying to decide if a cab is worth the extra $$

These tractors are a pain to fuel up. I stand on the tire with a 5 gal can. I have to figure out a better way.

We got really tired of this too and put in gravity feed tanks on our farms.

Hi MHarryE

I had the same problem with the lens popping of my rear amber lights driving my B26 in the woods. After almost losing a cover - I spotted it just before flattening it - I got a couple of zip ties and wrapped them around the lenses so it is not possible for them to get knocked off any more. Just be sure and use the black zip ties as they are UV resistant - the white / clear ones are not.

Regards,

Lauren

Will a pump nozzle with the shut off feature once full work with a gravity fed system?. If so I'd just find a 55 gallon drum and use that. Just build a stand of some sort for it. Just simply have a dealer fill it up, remove the 3/4" bung and replace it with a ball valve, and raise it into position with your fel on the stand. If you have room in a garage you could make it out of 2x4 lumber since diesel doesn't weigh that much. I'm sure you could get a shut off nozzle and hose for well under $100.

Ours don't have the auto shutoff, so I'm not sure if you can get them or not. We got one 300 gallon tank from a friend and the other provided by our dealership, so we weren't out any money and it sure beats the five gallon cans.

I believe there are others on here who use the drums with success.

Based on what I know of how they work I believe that yes, they will.

I think on some there's a small tube inside the nozzle that once fluid can no longer exit the nozzle it starts going up that tube. Not sure if it's pressure or a float inside it that shuts a valve in the handle. I just didn't know how much force it takes. It wouldn't be required for a gravity fed system but it's nice to prevent overfilling and they don't cost too much more than one without it.

I am still trying to decide between a larger CUT or a Utility sized tractor. I have been looking at the JD 5055e and the Kubota M5140 for the Utility sized tractors and the JD 4320 and Kubota Grand L series for the CUT. Looking in the 50 hp / 45 PTO range.

I am thinking that I would need at least an 8 or 10ft cutter to mow 20 acres in a reasonable amount of time, but I am not sure, I may be ok with something smaller. I think the CUTs have the HP I would need, but am concerned they may be not be heavy enough. Any opinions on these models in general or what size cutter would be appropriate for 20 acres?
Using a 6 foot mower and given smooth enough conditions and longer runs so you have less turning will mow 6-10 acres per hour= about 2- 3 hours for 20 acres. A 45-50 HP tractor can easily pull one 8 mph if you can stay in the seat. Mowing around trees and obstacles takes up a lot of time and wider mower wont help with that problem. At a point, the larger mowers become a hold back to production if you have to get between trees or build larger gates to get them thru. I have lots of trees that I couldnt mow between with more than 7 foot mower and 6 footer is good for 20 acres.

Don't they really rip you if they deliver fuel? Would they even want to deliver 50 gallons of fuel too?

If I'm fulling up my heating oil tanks I have them fill the 55 gallon drum with ORD. If I don't need heating oil I'll just bring the drum to them. Either way it's usually about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than off road diesel at the pump.
