no, it wasn't the bearings that cost that much, it was the
entire new outer tub, which at the time was the only option
from Whirlpool for repair. (which included new bearings/shaft)

they have since come out with just the kit to replace
the shaft/bearings/seal without having to purchase the
entire outer tub..
approx $70 for the kit.

hopefully it lasts more than 18 months this time,
but, at least i know the washer intimately now if I
have to do the repair again.

:D

I am changing my Cabrio bearings the old fashioned way. I work at a metal finishing shop and can process the shaft & get new bearings. Has anyone installed without a tool? How easy was it?
Thanks

no, i used the instructions that came with the parts. There is a scanned version on the website
i linked to, right under the part descriptions.

I did check out the link. I was asking since some of the pictures were dark and hard to see detail. I am thinking of trying this fix. About how long does it take? And would the special tools be required?

my printed instructions weren't all that much better to be honest. i was able to find detailed instructions on that same website on how
to remove the inner tub from that washer. i would say plan on a couple hours to do it, and i did not use any special tools. It helps
to have knowledge of bearings and how/where to seat them in place. I use different methods to drive them in, including large sockets
that fit on the race etc.
maybe there is another version of those instructions somewhere on the internet? i haven't checked in 6 mos or so.
