Is it a pain to raise trailer GVW?

once you register over 10000 and if your combination weight is over 26000 you will need class A CDL, also your truck will need dot #'s on it at all times when towing a 10000 GVW magnets are not allowed.

Its a little ridiculous. My dad bought 2012 Chevy 2500 ltz t0 tow his new 38 ft fifthwheel. He need to get a class 3, none of us including him thought he would get it( sleep issues).
Had he bought a large diesel pusher rv he would have been fine. Go figure.

In the states this is not the issue. There are exemptions for RV and boats along with farm use.

Around here the easiest way is to lose the Title and have a new one issued as a home built trailer.

You may not be overweight though. Take it to a scale with your heaviest item on it and weigh it out. All that matters is what is on the axles for both the trailer and the truck, that you dont exceed your trucks GCVWR, and its GVWR.

Being only 600# over by your guesstimate, you may not be when you consider the weight on the truck via the hitch. A 10,000# load should have 10% of that on the ball so about 1,000# of tongue weight which will now be on the truck.

Hey, good point. I never took that into consideration. Trailer is 3840, tractor is 6700, so that's 10,540. I'm sure that the tounge weight is more than that.

Wow, your numbers are so tight. I would try and check it with scale.

I know a guy that had a 7k or 10k trailer registered for 4k, the registration is cheaper. He is afraid to haul anything heavy on it. In Virginia anything over 3k must have brakes and be inspected yearly. I hate yearly inspections, they are a waste of time.

Actually, the less you use something, the more I want it inspected every year. Mechanical items have failures from sitting stagnant and rusting, corroding, etc more often than from being used and maintained. I don't know ANYONE that goes out and does maintenance on their trailer that's just sitting in their yard not being used.

Chris, I'm good. I weighed everything, and with the tounge weight, I actually have hundreds to spare.

Also, I kinda knew this, but just to make sure, after all you read here..... I spoke with DMV and asked (this guy was a supervisor) what the deal was with 10,000 and DOT #s...... He asked If I was private, I said yes. He then asked if I was over 26,000 GCVWR and I said no. He said have a nice day.

Good. Glad I could help and save you time, money, and frustration.

I agree. Inspections catch things that don't work. My brother has a 12' enclosed trailer, which I borrowed. I went through a police checkpoint, and got ticketed because the trailer wasn't inspected. My brother didn't think it needed to be (it never had been in the 13 years he owned it), but it is over 3000 pounds and has brakes. Long story short, the breakaway switch was bad, which got caught in the inspection. Had the trailer come lose and hurt someone, everybody would be screaming that it should have been inspected.

The sidenote to the story is to always check for a current inspection when you borrow a trailer... whoever is driving is responsible, not the owner.
