3-Point Hitch JD 2640 with1000rpm pto

I have a JD 2640 (1979) with what appears to be a 1,000 rpm 21 spline pto spindle. I recently purchased a King Kutter rotary mower with a six spline 540 rpm shaft. I have been told that some JD tractors have the capability to run both 540 and 1000 rpm, you just unbolt one spindle and replace with the other. If my tractor has this capability I would prefer to do this as opposed to getting an adapter. is there anyway to find out if my tractor has this capability? If I need to get an adapter are there any suggestions or lessons learned? as always thanks for all the help.

The swapping procedure is all in the operator's manual . The info covers several pages and more than one image. A few lines of info on the Internet can be just enough info to get into trouble.
Deere has an excellent online parts book for reference to ID which version of PTO system your 2640 was optioned with.
As some slob has lost the operator's manual. The nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 will help you out. Forget about an IT manual , too scant on the info.

If I didn't over look it I saw no 1000 rpm pto only option. All you need to do is "CAREFULLY" nose tractor frt end in a ditch,remove snap ring(parts key #32) pull 1000 rpm shaft out and insert AT29707 540 pto stub shaft,reinstall snap ring(parts key #32). HTH's until you get an OM,Jim

Thanks for the info. I have an OM manual I purchased after I bought the tractor and it does give description of how to change the pto stub but also says its for the "dual speed only" option. I talked with local JD dealer and they said was option and may have or may not. I didn't want to start and take everything apart and break something when I just needed an adapter. I'll take a look and take it apart and see. Thanks again!

What Jim is saying and what I believe to be true is that the 540 pto was standard and an option for the tractor was a 540/1000 pto. I don't think there was an option for a 1000 pto only. That means yu can remove the 1000 stub shaft and install the 540 stub shaft as that was standard or available in all scenarios. I think my second shaft was stored in a pocket (recess cavity) on the left side of the housing on my 4020.

I don't ever remember seeing a Dubuque/Mannheim utility tractor in person with the 540/1000 pto option. I think the 2640 won't have a cavity to store the alternate shaft in the manner that the Waterloo tractors have. If the stub shaft (AT29707) didn't come with the tractor then one will have to be obtained. A shaft can be obtained from A&I A-AT29707 PTO SHAFT ADD 266.72

Out of curiosity I just checked Deere parts online and verified that there is no listing for "1000 rpm pto only" for the 2640 tractor, so looks like buying the 540 stub shaft should fix you up.
