Mowing What size Bush Hog, 5' or 6'?!

My Bobcat CT235 (26.5 pto) handled a 5ft with ease. I sheared 2 bolts with it the first time I used it.

I would go with a 6ft. My experience is that you lose close to a foot with overlap while mowing. I always liked my mower to at least cover the tracks. Maybe you could rent or borrow one to see how your tractor handles it.

I would add, that my previous tractor was underpowered for the mower. It sucked... Ok in lite stuff. It was 19hp, 16pto-hp with a 4' rotary.

The current tractor is much bigger, 40 hp(35 PTO) with a 6' mower. It is soooooo much nicer to have a little extra HP(going by general 5hp/foot), than to be under powered.

In reality, a nice match for my old B8200 would have been a 3' mower... It was a great tractor, but same size as B2910 with only 19hp.

I vote 5'. My 25pto horsepower tractor runs a 5' bush hog well even over some uneven hilly terrain.

Thank you everyone, especially LD1. After reading your response (which explains a lot of factors and makes my decision easier), I think i will go with a 5' mower.

Another factor to consider is the weight of the mower. I have a Land Pride 1860 mower (5') which weighs almost 700 pounds. With the loader off, my L3400 is a little bit light in the front end. Not to the point I'd worry about it, but the power steering is truly effortless with the 'hog attached.

I've got 6 foot Howse mower on my L3700SU and it handles it pretty well. Have cut heavy brush, as tall as the tractor @ 2,200RPM.
I can mow grass @ 1,800RPM all day.

I had the dealer ad 4 Kubota Weights on the front, so I hope it will have no steering problems with a HD 5' mower, even if I were to buy a second 6' mower later on. I plan to ad a Kubota FEL in a few months when I'm done saving up for it. I bought the biggest tractor my budget allow (wanted new not used), and decided to get the FEL added later when I could afford that without having to eat rice and beans for 2 years ;-)
