New PTO wood splitter......problems with dead heading the tractors pump....

It does matter about the plumbing.

The pressure hose from the tractor must go to the IN port on the splitter valve.

The valve does have a relief, and should be adjusted to the same relief as the tractor.

With this valve, you can switch the work port hoses around to suit whichever way the cutting wedge is moving.

If the tractor is set to 2500 psi, the tractor will activate and this will limit the force on your log splitter as the valve used on the log splitter is set to 3000 psi.

That is a 6,283 lbs difference.

JJ and Gil, thanks for the explanations. After posting yesterday and I went out and split about 3 cords(one beech & two white oaks). Then this morning I split a red oak that was 23" at the base and 18" at 25 feet up....about another 2 cords. Just to experiment I reversed the hoses at the tractor remote and the splitter ran exactly the same other than what you said Gil...the lever to ram direction was backwards.

Yes it's spring operated so once engaged it stays there until manually returned to neutral. A kick out detent would be nice so you could go grab another round and not have to worry about hitting the relief valve if it reached the end of the stroke before you could get back to it.....do y'all think there is none on the splitter because most tractor valves already have one?

Anyway, the splitter performed perfect and I was unable to feed it anything that stopped it....knots and double branch rounds slowed it down a bit, but it plowed right through. I am loving the dual split action in addition to the table wings....all splitters should have tables on both sides:thumbsup:

Just curious as to why the splitter works the same with it plumbed backward...or would that be a temporary thing? I only split for about 5 min with is reversed. and yes, that Brand valve does appear to be the one on the splitter.

Did you switch the A and B work ports or the IN and OUT ports?

What does the specs say on the valve about the return port pressure?

Since that is a one spool valve, and on the bottom of the valve, there are two shiny caps.

The large one is for the spring center part of the spool, and I believe the small one covers the relief valve. It is also adjacent to the IN port.

At the tractor's rear remotes & switched the Hyd lines that lead to the splitter valve, everything else stayed the same. I will look at the paperwork to see if the return port spec's are listed.

These posts have me wondering. I have the 13 ton version. On mine, there are no detents. The ram only moves when the lever is held in position. As soon as you release it in either direction, it goes back to center. Maybe they have more than one version of the valve?

Like J_J said, I would respect the labels on the valve. That is, direct the pressure line from the tractor to the IN port on the valve, and the OUT port to the return line to the tractor. Basically, that valve works by diverting the IN pressure to one work port, and allows the other work port to be diverted to the OUT port. Now, yes, reversing the flow may work, because the plumbing inside the valve will still divert the oil. But there may be components on the OUT port side that were never designed for high pressure, and the pressure relief valve may not function correctly.

Edit: hit send before I was ready...

Kenny I think the valve arm was just staying put in either direction because it is new. Yesterday evening one side started returning to neutral when released and now the other only stays put sometimes. I think the little fork the arm pivots on was just real tight and now has worn in a bit.

ljohnson, I trust everything JJ says and I will run it the right way, I am just trying to learn more about these valves and how they operate. My hydraulic knowledge is extremely limited and there is a lot to learn which is the best part about TBN...tons of brains to pick:thumbsup:

Working alone it took me about 6 hrs to split all these up in the pic's. I am headed into the COOP today to get a load of crossties. I am going to stack the wood on crosstie runners and I also need to build a retaining wall with them.
