replacement cab speakers for 5740

Ok, I'll suck it up and try. I like music enough to do it, and as long as the headliner doesn't fall down (I've worked on boat headliners which are nightmares) this seems doable. Looks like I need two big stepladders, which I have, and a good friend to help me, which thankfully I also have. How heavy is the roof? Once you got it loose, how did two guys on different sides of a tall tractor get it down? Or did you just move it out of the way? Just trying to think before I unscrew...
Though I'm looking again at Paul/4Shorts on top of his tractor and the roof doesn't look all that big. Maybe just the idea seems BIG to me... And no leaks when done? Is there caulk or foam insulation around the edge to contend with, or does the roof overlap enough to make that unnecessary? Also wondering if once the roof is off, maybe a layer of Soundown insulation on top might help quiet the cab, though likely the noise comes in from elsewhere.

Thanks guys. Maybe I just needed some moral support here, and your pics are super helpful.

Like I said. There will be two short bolts at the door openings that will hold the headliner up anyway. If you take out a short 1" bolt that will be the head liner bolt so just put him back in and move on to the Next bolt. If that bolt is long 2" + then it's a roof bolt and leave him out and continue on until you've worked your way around.
I used one ladder, went up the ladder, lifted up the roof and went down the ladder myself but it would be easier with some help but I'm thinking the plastic roof weighs around 25 lbs.
there's just a foam seal around the roof section that stays on it so there's nothing to worry about there. The roof is moulded to fit down over the cab so leaking has never been an issue.
When tightening the roof bolts during re-assembly just snug them in. After all its only a plastic roof and small aluminum inserts in the roof for the bolts. Start all the bolts in first then tighten. This will insure all bolts will go into the roof ok. When the roof is off place it in a safe place so the wing won't knock it over and damage it. Oven ever added any extra insulation under the roof. Didn't feel it ever needed it. By the way, that headliner is very ridged. It won't fold up on you or anything like that. It's really moulded pastic with material glued to it so don't worry bout it. Just try not to get it dirty ok :D
Its really is very simple.
Good luck

I'll get some photos of the roof for you when I get out to the shops office in a little while so you can see how it looks off.

thanks Paul. At only 25-30 pounds, this seems easier. I was worried about manhandling and scratching a much heavier roof. Drew

boy this was helpful. And "off season" we could go lake boating on that roof, or maybe a little snow sledding!

I did replace my speakers without taking off the roof by using a locking-washer that self tightened when I put the new speakers in. Then a while later I had a little accident where I needed to replace the roof and found that it was not that big of a deal to get to the speakers by removing. A word of caution...the roof is paper thin and could crack up if dropped or banged against something and not a cheap replacement.....

OK BUT How did you remove the speaker grill from the speaker when the nuts that are on the inside of the roof started to turn? You wouldn't be able to hold the nuts because the roof is still on. If you were lucky enough to get the nuts off without removing the roof where did the OEM nuts go? They must have fallen down inside the roof area? In the time that it took you to try and remove those eight nuts you could have had the roof off four times.

I replaced mine without removing the roof as well, all you have to do is hold light pressure outward on the grill as you loosen the screws. It was not difficult at all, I used
The clips that came with the new speakers (Polk) to reinstall.

I don't think I got all the nuts (don't remember), but a magnet should serve well?
