I believed I may have talked with you on the telephone. I have a Nortrac with a pto problem. I tried to fix the pto cylinder thinking that it had blown the seal. I tried every way in which to see how I can get to it. I think I might have damaged it, I was trying to remove the rear coupling out of it and I believe that I sheared off the set pins that hold the spring in a certain position. It looks as though I will have to completely remove the whole housing and flip it upside down to get the cylinder casing out of the housing in which it is bolted through the bottom. I can't get the coupling to thread back onto the linkage that feeds through the housing. I really can't believe that there isn't a way in which we as owners of these tractors can get a service manual in which it actually shows you how to tear it down to repair it. The companies which sell these tractors should work with the manufactures to help the owners get these service manuals.

Thanks Stanley

Hey Guys

Here is an update on that cylinder that lifts the bush hog. I have tore it down, however I had to put a least 40 pounds of pressure to blow out the piston. The seal and scraper look okay, that is they don't look damaged. The piston wouldn't come out all the way because the cylinder is located to close to the shaft casting where the shaft that connects to the levers that come out of the reservoir box. Would there be something else like a relief valve located in the system that could be stuck open. The pump still lifts the front loader. It is super clean in the reservoir and the filter isn't clogged.
What else would keep the system from working. I looked on the shaft and nothing is stripped. I just can't tell what the problem is.

There is a relief valve in the 3PH control valve. look for a square headed plug on top of the 3PH control valve. Under that plug you will see some washers and a spring and below that a valve plug that sets on a valve seat... If that was not seated fully, I think the 3PH would leak down. A way to check and or isolate this problem is to raise the 3PH, then screw that speed regulator valve in front of the seat all the way closed. This should seal off the 3PH cylinder and isolate it from the 3PH valve. If it still leaks down, the problem is most likley in the 3PH cylinder. If it does not leak down, then the 3PH cylinder is OK, and the problem exists in the 3PH control valve and or it's associated relief valve...

Hey Guys

Finally got the lift fixed. What took 3 weeks to do, could have taken me 4 hours. I took pictures of the tear down to make sure that I rebuilt it the way I tore it down. It wasn't very complicated, however it did take take some reasoning to figure out why the engineers decided to make something like this. I didn't take the reservoir of the tractor. I thought I would see if I could replace the cylinder seal. It was still good. It took 40 pounds of air pressure to get it out of the cylinder housing. This tractor only has around 67 hours on it, and I find it amazing that the part that I removed had rust on it. This part fits into the block housing that operates the stem which has the oil by pass ports. The controls where useless because the stem had stuck inside of the cylinder. The spring wasn't strong enough to push the stem back out to to touch the controls. In essence the oil was by passing the lift mechanism acting more like a relief valve. Here are some pictures in which you will see the parts that got stuck. a (11).jpga (12).jpga (13).jpg006.jpg After looking at the last picture you will notice that the stem is sticking out about 3/4 of inch. When I first started working on it I didn't know that it was stuck and needed to be out this far. It was push flat to the block. I hope this will help anyone else that is having a problem. I really can't explain why it has rust in it. I took a brass wire brush and to the cylinder and 1000 grade emery cloth to the stem. Thinking that I found the problem I re-installed everything and it started working again.

Hydraulic fluid is hydrophobic, which means your hydraulic fluid has been contaminated with water. When oil and water are combined with heat and vibration, they form an emulsion, sorta like a sticky foam. That crud will be sticking to any interior parts of the hydraulic system that are not keep clean by regular flow. Unless you get rid of it, it will continue to contaminate. You should perform a thorough flush with kerosene before refilling with fresh hydraulic fluid.
