It looks like an apple tree to me. If so, that rot is characteristic of apple trees that old. Makes great
smoking wood or firewood.

Yes, it was an apple tree.

It is amazing how much work the FEl/BH /tractor can do.. nice photos
Just wondering why leaving the mmm on while doing the tree clean up.??
Good way to get your deck or blades damaged.

The MMM was on since we had not done our final mowing yet. It would have been a pain to take it off just to use the BH for a few hrs. Also gives some protection for the HST fan, but I agree it would have been best if it was off.

Go to Ebay put search for HST fan cover ,, cost about 100.00 works great. Maybe send a letter to Santa and he'll get you one.

I always get a kick out of seeing those bota lawn mowers with loaders and hoes working like that. Were you able to make a little side cash cleaning up at neighbors with it?

Thought I would share some pictures of me and my cousins cutting up an uprooted tree after Hurricane Sandy:

If any safety violations are pictured, it's not my fault. :D

Just a thought if you have to do it again. I can see that you guys are aware that you can't use a chainsaw down there in the dirt, but I have found that a sawzall (aka reciprocating saw) does a great job of getting into tight places and snipping off those roots once you have dug a bit of the dirt away. A lot easier than a hatchet and blades are cheap so no big deal if you dull one in the process. Safety goggles definitely required though.

Nice work on the cleanup adn repair to your property though.

CTF,

A couple of comments...

1.) Get yourself some quality saw chaps. A $75 investment in chaps will save you a lot of pain, 200+ stitches, and a lifetime scar. See, for example, link.
2.) Nice work!
3.) Don't forget to feed your friends.
4.) Keep your apple trees topped and they won't present such a big wind load. Some trees toppling is inevitable but if you keep them trimmed a bit you can avoid a lot of unwanted damage.
5.) As trees go, that's pretty short. :)

That does sound like a good idea, but that pic was taken before we decided to break out the backhoe. No problems then. :D

#1: That was my uncle with the saw. We have a nice pair of chaps, but he refused to wear them. Was afraid that he would trip with them on.

#2, #3, #4, and #5: Thanks, yup, yes, and yeah.
