red grease an overkill for everydays greasong on heavy equipment

I dont pay much attention to grease anymore. For me, it is simple. For pins and bushings (backhoe, loader, etc), I use a thick black EP grease WITH Moly. For bearings, like mower deck spindles, u-joints, etc, I use a synthetic grease. Usually red stuff. Like mobil SHC 460 or SHC 32.

We use dupont Krytox at work for some applications. These are for fairly large bearings (most 4"-8" ID) and are precision roller bearings. They are also in a high heat-high humidity environment around a lot of steam. The tubes are around $140 each and a small bucket (about 2-1/2 gallons) runs close to $4,000. It takes 2-3 of the buckets to do the entire corrugator, 3-4 tubes to do one bearing if you almost completely purge the old stuff out.

Funny you mention that. I used to work at a box shop. And that krytox was used on all the steam heated rolls and pre-heaters. You aint kidding about it being expensive. Looks like crisco:laughing: I heard a rumor (not sure if it was true) that they tried the krytox in nascar wheel-bearings. And it didnt work well cause the wheel bearings wouldnt get hot enough to allow the grease to work properly.

What company was it you work for (if ya dont mind my asking)?? I worked for weyerhaeuser and tehn got laid off shortly after IP putchased all the CBPR plants. We had a United and a MHI 50c Single facers. Ran ~930 fpm depending on cut length. Not bad for the old 50c;)

It's a small world. I used to work for a company that had paper mills, corrugated, and bag plants. It started out as Stone Container Corporation which was the best manufacturing company I ever worked for - they really took care of their employees. Naturally they got bought out by Jefferson Smurfit and became Smurfit-Stone - that is when everything went down hill. Then Smurfit-Stone was purchased by RockTenn. How I miss the good old days!

I started working for weyerhauser about 6 years ago, they got bought out by IP about 2 years later. I hate IP, but it pays the bills. We have an entire MHI corrugator (57g single facers), runs anywhere from 850-1000 fpm depending on paper grade. We also have 2 MHI converting machines- they run fast, but are very maintenance intensive.

IP just recently purchased Temple-Inland also, surprised it went through the DOJ, they have to be nearing a monopoly.

Wow, small world.

So you used to be a weyerhaeuser Employee as was I. Ironically, I started there about 6 years ago also. (March 2006). I was hired because Weyerhaueser was re-structuring and out plant was becomming a "hub" plant that would run 24/7. With the IP purchase and in the midst of the economic crash, us being a hub plant didnt fit the IP model. So they scaled back to 5 day a week, 3-shift operation and I was laid off in 2009.:mur:

I did enjoy working for Weyerhaueser though. Good company to work for. My old man still works there.

I dont know if I missed it, but what do you do out there?? Maintenance, Production, or Management??

And yea, I am surprised they were allowed to buy Temple Inland:confused2:

Maintenance... I am not sure, at least at our plant, that anyone in management would even know how to use a grease gun much less know anything of the different types of grease.

I heard you there. We had a few good ones though. That started in maintenance, and then maint. supervisor and on up. But most were just career management personnel that knew nothing about how to run or work on machines. Only about how to make "policies" and "procedures" that were beyond stupid.

I am all for safety, and safe work environments, but the IP where I used to work, actually has a sign on one of the doors that reads "Caution, turn lights on when entering room"
