I see where some if you are running oils made for different types of 2 stroke engines. It is very important that you run an oil designed for an air-cooled engine.

YOU are right. Marine oils designed under the TCW3 standards can be used in air cooled engines like those found on week eaters, chain saws, leaf blowers, ect but not vise versa. Never use a air cooled oil like the products form Stihl in a water cooled 2 stroke motor.

I have heard two schools of thought on this. The first is that you should use whatever ratio the engine calls for. The second is that you should use whatever ratio the oil calls for. I subscribe to the second. The important thing is that you get the proper lubrication from the oil. It makes sense that a modern synthetic could provide proper lubrication with a higher ratio than some old dino-juice. Honestly, I don't know why manufacturers put an oil ratio in their owner's manuals, since they have no idea what type of oil the customer is going to be running.

Lucky guy. We can not get non ethanol fuels here. A law was passed in 2010 that all gas has to be 10% ethanol and all diesel has to be 2% minimum. For a while we could get non ethanol at marinas, the co-op, and a few airports but now they all run E10 except the airports which did away with gas for just 100LL aviation fuel. I run it in my 2 stroke stuff now.

Chris

Hi Chris - that 2% in diesel down your way is ___________ ? Bio or Ethanol ?

Apologies for drifting.... Rgds, D.

Bio. That is the min. Most are over 10 percent.

What is the gas oil mix ratio for a two-cycle engine on a hand held product?

I guess based on the link above 2-cycle oil/gas mix ratios must be political instead of being technical in nature. :D

" On MTD handheld equipment manufactured 2002 and prior, the manuals recommend mixing these fluids at ratio of 32-to-1 (gasoline-to-oil)*. This 32:1 mixture can be made by mixing 4 ounces of two-cycle engine oil with 1 gallon of gasoline. *For the state of California, use a mixture ratio of 40-to-1. "

Gale - Yep, the Polly Ticks are a much bigger problem than the Tek No Loggy !

Thanks Chris, I was hoping you'd say Bio, but B10+ !

'Nuff about that (needs a separate thread).... being Canadian, I just had to ask (most automotive decisions that affect me daily are made in Washington, not Ottawa).

I personally wouldn't run leaded fuel in anything that I'm holding. Those fumes aren't good for you as it is, and especially so when you are adding lead to the mix.

As long as you don't let your fuel get too old, pump gas is just fine. I've never had a carb problem with any of my equipment. And my saws have cut a LOT of wood.

you must have nothing but 5 year old equipment. i routinely replace rotten fuel lines due to the ethanol eating them up on my older 15+ yo equipment.

I used to be able to go all summer 4-6 months on a mix of 2 cycle for saws, weedeaters, blowers, mowers etc. now i notice a distinct diffrence in performance is the mix is aproaching 2 months old and is basicly unusable if its 4-6 months old due to E10 content.

I use 50:1 premium synthetic 2 Stroke premix oil usually either Motul 2T or Husqvarna in all our air cooled 2 stroke equipment (including blowers, mowers, pumps etc), our Huksy/Sthil chainsaws in constant use do a lot better on this than anything else, the bonus is the plugs/exhaust/sparks screens stay clean too - even our old big McCulloch PM850's/1000's from the 70's seem to thrive on this stuff/mix.

We only ever use premium non-ethanol fuel & only use freshly mixed 2stroke fuel in our 2 stroke equipment

The 041av was bought new in 1973...

It's had the carb rebuilt along with fuel lines replaced. But this was all in the '90's before this fuel got here.

I'm not discounting the fact that the ethanol in gas now is corrosive. I'm just saying that if you mix what you will use in short order you will not be likely to have problems.
