2014 Silverado/Sierra released

My brother had a 2010 Chevy 5.3 with AFM that he towed his boat with every weekend and never had a problem with anything. He traded the x-cab Chevy for a standard cab 2012 GMC 5.3...

I did not say it dont happen, i work with a guy that has an 09 5.3 with AFM and so far all is fine.

Are you saying this didn't happen??

He is a very good freind, i see him all the time and we go out to eat with he and his wife all the time, he is the cheif of our VFD, which i am on as well. The guy is a Hyundai certified mecanic so he's no dummy to mecanics. He only had the truck a year or less when this occured and tows vary rarely and only drives the truck a few days a week. He told me at a FD meeting that his truck was "getting rebuilt" i questioned him, he was driving a loaner jeep Liberty at the time and the dealer had the truck for a week or so building the motor. They refused to put a short block in it. He said when the motor was pulled and the pan off and they took the rod caps off the end of the rods the pistons just "fell out " , which is what the shop told him in thier words not something he made up. They said the rings welded to the pistons and that this was a know and common problem with the 08 and ups. He said they do "several of them a month (or week, dont remember??)" again the words repeated of the dealership. They put new pistons in, rod bearings, rings, and wrist pins. I said what about the cylinders with them slapping all around, he said i guess that was good!!!! I hope so!!

Anyway i have been a fan of GM. I own an old K10 and also own ford ranger. I will never buy a new truck though, one because i really cant afford to spend that kind of money on one, 2 i dont see the point, and 3 you can buy one a year old with a few k miles on it for 10grand or more less and the truck is basically still new!

In a salt heavy climate like here, drum brakes outlast discs no problem. I've had some drum brakes on daily drivers go 200,000 miles with 0 maintenance, put in a new set of shoes and they were good to go again. Up here on discs the rotors don't get hot enough to dry out and pit like crazy leading to destroyed pads in no time, the pins get rusty and jammed etc. Its quite normal to put a set of pads and rotors all the way around up here every year even with low mileage.

I like everything else about discs though, wouldn't go back to front drums lol.

What?????? You must be the only guy in American thst likes drums. Disc are much more efficent, weigh less, easier to inspect, easier to work on, and reduce unsprung weight.

Heck, I even have disc brakes on two of my three trailers.

I wouldn't say that i prefer drums, but also don't care one way or another on a truck. The advantage of discs is that they don't fade as quickly, heat buildup causes drums to expand and therefore become less effective. Discs are easier to work on, yes, but drums actually take less pressure to get the same effective braking force. Also, (this is speculation, no facts to back it up) I would have to assume that discs would be able to have a more effective abs system because they do seem slightly quicker to respond, especially releasing- if rear abs is that important to you. If I lived in a very hilly area or had a sports car that I drove like a sports car should be driven, then I would prefer discs, but for the flat highway country driving that I do in a truck, drums work just fine.

My '03 Z71 had 4 wheel discs, but for some reason they brought back the drums a few years later.

I would suspect that 90% of the truck owning populace outside of TBN could not tell you the difference between drum and discs and wouldn't know it if their truck had either.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. I have no trouble with the bail-out since the US Gov't DID in fact bail out the whole financial system and kept us out of another great depression.

I suspect you are right on most not knowing the difference but that still does not mean that the disc brakes on all 4's are far superior.

As far as build quality I would say my 05 Dmax was extremely poor. Poorly fit panels, paint, interior, rattles, ect. I only had the truck 9 months from new but it was junk! I have had nearly 25 vehicles by everyone and this one would not have lasted 5 years.

As far as the bailouts go do some research. I did and found there were many local banks and such that did not take a dime along with Ford and the imports. I moved my home mortgage to one of these such banks. All it took was a quick google search. Everything else I own is paid for including the 3 vehicles, tractors, boats, ect so there was nothing to do there but I would have refinanced them also with a non bailout institution.

Exactly what does this have to do with anything?....Gm may have gotten a bailout (and Ford did too in a roundabout way that you won't address)..However, at least GM didn't burn down garages and cars due to garbage cruise contols and now the vaunted Ford turbo's (Escapes etc) are catching on fire too...The ceo said 2 weeks ago there was no fix (that's comforting)now the've found one...

Living in a glass house should cause some level of careful assult of the other guys. You need to cool it.

Myself I'm not interested in any of the truckmakers new trucks. Haven't been interested in a Ford without the 7.3. GM after '06.5 on diesels. Dodge, do they make trucks? I have done quite well maintaining my older trucks. When the engine blows, I'll get a reman engine.

I was waiting to see what Chevy was going to come up with interior wise and it looks like a dodge and ford had a baby and somebody hit it with the ugly stick. I have owed seven Chevys and I think the two I have now will be my last. GM really dropped the ball.

Ok, I'm man enough to admit a problem where it happens...Here it is:

This morning around 11:30am my 2011 GMC 4x4 6.2 went into "limp" mode compaining about stab cntl failure...400+Hp and can't go more than 5mph up hill...Needless to say, I was ticked---to say the least. Made it home and called the dealer, they hooked me up with GM Road Side...They were more concerned with my safety than anything else...I was good in that regard..Must have gotten 5+ calls from them giving me updates on the flatbed etc...We loaded the truck and it was being sent to a dealer that I wanted no parts of--GM RA rerouted the flatbed to the dealer of my choice... One hour later I go a call from the dealer where I wanted it and they attacked the problem.

Seems that the thottle body failed..2 hours later the dealer called me and said come and get it...

Kudos to GM RA and Wright GMC of Beaver PA...THAT, my friends, is customer service!!!!!.

PS: This was my first ever experience with GM RA and I could not be more impressed. And no, I don't have OnStar.

That would never have happened on a Ford.
