We'll see if they dropped the ball or not when it is tested.

It's been proven it was a bad system since they came out with it in 2007. Check out gmtrucks.com sometimes and read what the owners think about AFM. 90% of GM current and former owners absolutely HATE it. it consumes oil (which GM has no explanation for and is now calling it "normal"), I've read a number of engine failures around 100,000 miles because of AFM. again, go check out gmtrucks.com and other GM truck sites and you will find out all you need to know about AFM. if they have resolved the issues for this new model that tells me 1) they new they had a problem on the 2007-2013 models and lied about it being normal 2) why didn't they make these updates to the current trucks 3) comine numbers 1 and 2 and that will cause you to make alot of people mad because they feel cheated and you just lost them as customers.

90%? Really?

Our '07 Avalanche had it. 3 yrs with no problems. I know it's an issue because the dealer I work for also does Chevy trucks, but I don't know a single person who has actually had any noticeable problem.

The main heavy line tech there is a friend of mine and I've seen him doing the shortblocks and other associated repairs. He says most of the trucks he sees with oil consumption haven't been getting regulate service.

Btw, Honda uses a similar system with little to no issues.

I'm sure that system to be employed on these NEW Gen. V engines will be a new design.

yes, 90% of the people on gmtrucks.com, I didn't say 90% of GM truck owners. that not getting regular maintinance is a crock of crap and an excuse GM is using to get out of it.

Chryslers' seems to work just fine, too, but what good is that doing GM? like i stated earlier, 6 years of selling trucks with known issues does nothing for the owners of those trucks who are experiencing problems. who says they will want to go buy a new truck with it when they were told the oil consumption was normal? why didn't they fix the issues on the current trucks?

Wow! I can really feel the love!

I'm a big fan of the domestic brands in general, but I like the styling of the GM trucks the best. I've had my 2012 2500HD now for nearly a year and can honestly say that its been by far the best truck I've owned.

I'll be the minority here and say that I like the new truck designs, but "all-new" is a stretch. The exterior is more like a heavy re-fresh. Interior is very nice. I can't wait to see them in person.

Does anybody else have a full line of DI engines and are any NA V8's? That innovative, right? Sounds like GM engineers were reading this board when all the Ecoboost haters came on to bad mouth turbos and such. And they may be on to something. These engines are certainly more simple.

On the oil consumption issue, the high acceptable rate is not something new for just the AFM engines. I have an '03 impala, and if I remember correctly there was a TSB stating anything less than 1 qt. per 1000 miles does not need to be adressed and that is considered "normal." Maybe it wasn't that extreme, but I know it was an awful lot.

I would change the oil around 7k and somewhere in the middle of that I would have to add a quart of oil. Not terrible, but more than I like, especially when a quart of synpower is like $7. I recently did the intake manifold gaskets because of a coolant leak, and while I was at it, changed the valve cover gaskets because I was pretty sure that was the source of the oil leak. So far it seems to have taken care of it. This car has 182K on it.

Honestly doesn't seem like that big of an issue, looks like the people burning oil in the first few pages are burning less than a qt in 3000-5000 miles or even less oil, no biggie. If it really bothers you then swap up to 10-30 oil which is thicker or swap to a different brand oil which really does make a difference I've seen it change consumption in my own truck; Valvoline Classic 15/40 high TBN would use about 3/4-1 qt in 10,000 miles, they quit selling that oil and now get Rotella LE low emission oil and at 7500 miles it doesn't use barely any.

Some of those guys though seems like they need a new engine, if my junk smoked at start up that truck would be lemoned which it looks like gm is doing.

I'd be less worried about this than replacing a turbo on the ecoboost at high miles, or all the doodads on the Ram because if they are anything like their older Chrysler makes they will be worth scrap metal in 5 years when that junk starts breaking. Literally my aunt sold a 5 year old Intrepid with a bad wiring harness and some other etc for bascially scrap. Fix the wiring for $1500-2000? and sell the car for 4000 or just sell the car for 1500 as a fixer upper. She decided to sell it as a fixer upper, it sat for a year under a tree for a year oh and one window wouldn't roll all the way up.

If I had to buy my "last" truck to take with me forever I'd get a 5.0 F150. Those mod motors are known for getting tons of miles, ever ride in a taxi cab that has 400k city miles on it because that is pretty common. I always ask and they generally say it is all original. I always wash my hands after getting out of one of those cars and try not to touch too much like I am in a porti potty, lol.

Cummins is even the same or worse. I think they say 750 or even 500 miles per qt how ever the math works. That is when they recommend a rebuild. This is from a direct email from Cummins when I was asking because I was going to buy a toter special built dodge ram to pull airplanes with at an auction. Had like 6000 miles on it but around that many hours so I asked and that was their reply. They also told me to get back with them and send them pics when I was done, pretty cool, too bad I lost the bid on the auction.

I don't think GM is stating that the problem is caused by a lack of maintenance. It was just an observation by the tech.

Why did Ford replace spark plugs that blow with ones that get stuck and break off in the head?
