I don't know folks... Maybe I'm soft. Maybe it's the time of year. I've made poor decisions in my life, plenty of 'em. Thankfully, friends and family didn't lecture me on how I made my own bed, etc. They showed me compassion, and helped me out. I have a great job now, and have more than enough to provide for my needs. I find it very rewarding to pay it forward, rather than being judgmental. Remember, "There, but for the grace of God, go I..."

I wish the retired gentleman referenced by the OP well, and would help if I knew who he was. Regarding the food stamp purchase, I simply can't judge, because I don't know any of the circumstances surrounding it. Was it an ailing family member's request? I'm ok with that. Was it a parent's attempt to help their family live a little and feel like "normal" people and splurge a bit? I'm ok with that.

Merry Christmas everyone.

I feel the same way. I did a lot of dumb things, but I was lucky enough to survive. And I now realize that nobody is garuanteed time. Use it or lose it. I try to help folks out, mostly my neighbor's. I give to the SA, Toy for Tots, and a local shelter. I've given up on churches. Religion has always been the refuge of scoundrels, they have gone corporate.

Sorry for the tread drift.

Just have everyone go on FOOD STAMPS then they can order Lobster & Steaks like this person did with YOUR MONEY

As with most of the Internet memes circulating that purport to show the abuses of welfare recipients, there is more to this one than meets the eye. Snopes and UrbanLegends.com agree that the receipt is legitimate. However, the person who bought the lobster and steak was not treating himself to a luxurious meal. Rather, he purchased the food with the intent of reselling it. This is a common method that food stamp recipients use to convert their food stamps to cash so that they can buy other, non-food, needed items. It is often the case that food stamp recipients are able to meet their dietary needs through other means, but have other needs, like medical care or just clothes or whatever, that they can't get government assistance to meet. So they convert their food stamps to cash by buying expensive food items and then reselling them at as close to cost as they can. Alternatively, they sell their food stamps to someone else, who uses them to buy food for resale.

Buying food stamp items for resale and/or selling food stamps is illegal, and the person who created this receipt has been charged with a felony.

As a recently retired person who is still too young for medicare and living off a small SS check and my savings, I cant have any compassion for someone who draws $5000 per month pension and medicare and claims to have monetary needs. Like the post where the woman claims needs and still has 2 quads and other extragant items, not money from me on that either and no money for the welfare folks that continue to use $150 per month smart cell phones. IF they need a cell phone, cheaper options exist for 1/4th of that amount and even free from our give everything away government. Story on news a few days ago about how easy it was to get 4 or 5 of the free phones that come with 200 minutes a month. SO get 5 and have 1000 minutes for FREE. Probably using them to keep up with there drug dealer contact anyway.
Sorry, I just have no compassion for most of the folks on welfare sucking the system dry when they could work and make a living but prefer to live off the working class, have illegitimate kids to get more welfare and spend their (our money) on drugs, big screen tv's and luxury SUV's. JUST CALL ME SCROOGE< I DONT MIND>

Another ploy that irks me that pops up at this time of the year is the one where a class field trip (very educational) is organized by a teacher.
Students then go door to door to get sponsors (donations) to pay for the trip. Naturally said trip is to a part of the world that the teacher has yet to visit.
As a group affair the teacher usually gets a free ticket for his/her efforts. The better organizers often also get local weekly newspaper writeup to promote the affair.
When I refuse to donate I get told that I am denying a student his/her education.

But then I am in Quebec where students went on strike because the wanted the university tuition frozen at the ridiculous rates that are like a fraction of world rates.
Under the newly elected government they won the freeze but are not satisfied, they want free university!

Call me BAH-HUMBUG but I paid my way and my kids as well.

In all likelihood the kids bled him dry and now want someone else to continue supporting them in the lifestyle they think they deserve. If he is exceeding the $66,000.00 dollar annual pension he is currently receiving, something is wrong. Call me hard hearted, cruel or whatever but I would be de-friending someone and not making any contributions. Way to many seniors I think it is 49% are living at or near the poverty level for me to be making cash gifts to someone receiving $66,000.00 annually. I have found the Salvation Army does a good job of sorting out "Free Loaders" but they also occasionally get scammed. It is shocking the number of individuals involved in such scams at Christmas.

BINGO !!! My income is currently $1600 per month after taxes, my mortgage payment with property taxes is $755 per month, utility bills average $250 per month, car insurance and house insurance and LTC insurance is $240 a month....my primary vehicle is a 13 year old truck...the idea that somebody needs financial aid when they earn $66,000 a year is simply inane.

Man that's tight, that leaves you only 355 bucks to eat gas for the car, tractor.

Plus that has to cover my medical care deductibles and prescriptions and food and vet care for four cats....hey, I am not really that bad off compared to some folks...I can still inhale and exhale on my own and take a s*** unassisted and SS kicks in 8 months from now....

Around here is this radio commercial citing how for every $1 paid in food stamps $1.80 is returned to the community. At that rate everyone would be living in abundance in short order. Geez, if I could invest a dollar and get 1.80 back, I'd be beyond rich in no time.

Another pet peeve of mine, and it may vary you others live, but here we have a very active dual economy, very common for folks to work one job that either qualifies for benefits (medical, retirement, etc), but still allows them to collect a level of taxpayer benefits plus they have cash income - no taxes, no social security, not traceable. If you can make 100-200 / day, keep it all, plus the other incomes, that isn't bad living.

Yeah, they buy other items, all right. Cigarettes and alcohol.

Just keep on. Posters on this will have to join me in the heathen room. Do I need to put my name on my chair; I don't want to lose my seat because I spend a lot of time in the room. Heathen was the nice mixed couple and small children name I was called. I would post where I was told I was going, but they don't allow that kind of language on the forum.

People posting on this topic are just as dumb and ignorant as I am. How can we be so cold, hard hearted and void of compassion and not understand when individuals on Food Stamps and receiving Un-Employment are givers to the community, not takers? They are actually helping the community.

"A study by Moody's Analytics recently found that every dollar spent by the government on benefits for the unemployed produces an overall return of $1.61 for the economy. Guest host Lynn Neary talks with Moody economist Sophia Koropeckyj about what makes unemployment checks stimulate the economy, and why other types of government spending don't do nearly as much good."

Returning $1.61 to the community for every dollar an individual receives in un-employment and $1.80 for every food stamp dollar definitely makes the recipients a "Giver" not a "Taker"? So why are we complaining? I bet if we factored in all tax payer assistance being received, and money being returned, we will find individuals living off the tax payers back are the people keeping the economy from a total collapse.
