Who owns an oil lamp?

I have an Aladdin that I have had for 15 years and use it once or twice a year. ALso have five carbide lamps that I use more often. They date from the 60's. I used to do a lot of caving and they are what we used for lighting. All you need is a lump of carbide and a little water and they provide a nice white light for 5 or 6 hours. A couple pounds of carbide lasts for years. Getting hard to find now-a-days though..

Does anyone have a dual fuel that uses unleaded gas?

Um....I'm thinking that unleaded near open flame, heat and something that is easily knocked over is not a really good idea.

We have a few about. Use the lamp oil from Walmart. Don't use very much these days unless just a nice ambiance thing on the tables outside at night. Being off grid, we aren't concerned with losing power as that would just mean running the generator. We we first moved here however, our electric was very minimal so every night we would light 2 oil lamps. Made for a nice, warm atmosphere.

have one of those oil lamps from wal mart. got it just for 95% decoration and 5 % emergencies. Every time power goes out, I just go out and start the genny.

I have about a dozen or so. Some are antiques(glass fuel bottom, metal fuel bottom with circular reflector) some are new India/China knock offs. I also have 6+ of the Dietz style lamps. We use them occasionally when the lights go out - if more than an hour I go and start the generator. We sometimes light them up just because... We also use them on the deck in the summer. I don't like the scented oils and I find kerosene smelly as well. I noticed on the Dietz webpage that they sold an oil - W.T. Kirkman Oil and Electric Lanterns: 32 oz. Medallion Lamp Oil/Kerosene Substitute that does not smell. There price is good but the shipping is expensive.

Keep the wicks trimmed. Growing up my Mom cleaned the glass chimneys using newspapers - I tried it and it works great.

Enjoy but be safe.
