are my front tires wimpy?

did you tear up your sidewall? Or just a tired tire?
I'd like to learn more about what wrecks modern tractor tires, so maybe I can avoid it...

I ran over a broken T post stub. I hauled it to Free Service Tire, they said they could patch it, I waited two weeks, they then called and said they couldn't. By the time a new replacement tire came in I was without a loader tractor for over a month. It was a costly mistake I hope to never make again.

I actually started a thread that had pictures of the damage.

FWIW, the Kubota MX4700 and MX5100 use considerably larger tires and it is the same compact grand L 'chassis'. So you could upgrade (all around I'm guessing) to the MX4700 tires for a more beefy front tire.

I could be wrong, but I think the MX models are still using a 16" diameter wheel on the front, the same as the Grand L's, although the MX does take a wider tire. The rears are indeed on larger rims. Years ago there was a TBN member who wanted to upgrade the tires on his Grand L to a premium Michelin industrial series because it had aggressive R1-type lugs on a heavy R4 carcass - pretty neat concept, no? The issues were the cost and finding suitable sizes. After he bought the tires he found the new front tires would snag the loader brackets in a full lock turn, making it necessary to torch off some of the loader mounts before he could use the tractor. The more recent higher horsepower Grand L's have a slightly longer wheelbase, but it's still pretty tight quarters, particularly the clearance behind the front wheels.

sounds like all I would gain is an inch in height or width without running into things.
The moral of this story is they aren't very big, but they were designed that way.
I like the idea of more real ballast for all sorts of good reasons.

Seriously, I have a Kubota with front tires nearly the size of yours and I wouldn't want them any larger. I guess it depends on what you use it for, but on tight turn arounds in the brush and woods with obstacles it would seem the larger tires would be an encumbrance. I have a JD with tires similar to the LS referenced, but that one is more of an open field tractor where there is no down side to the taller tires.

You could try swapping the front tires to the rear and the rears to the front. That would look cool and it shouldn't mess with the 4wd at all cuz that's what the factory installed as original equipment
