I have a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 first focal plane scope. I had a recent range trip and had the magnification at 16x. I didn't check it in the blind. Usually I dial it back to 6-8x to match the magnification of my binoculars, then increase it if I have time. At 130 yards my field of view was just fine, but different story with a dog running right to left and getting closer... For the distances involved (max range is 450 yards to the hillside) I think this scope is perfect. If I was shooting in the wide open spaces out west with longer range shots I might want something that goes 5-20.
I'm presently having a stainless match barrel put on my Rem 700 long action in 8mm Mauser. I was looking for a heavier caliber with some recoil for some extended range experience without breaking the bank. I happen to have some of the 70's to 99 M76 sniper ammo which I got at a way lower price than I can even reload 308 ammo, so it is primarily a learning tool. Interesting enough, the McGowan barrel I am getting installs on the Remington action with a Savage style nut, so in future I might have a few different barrels for that action - basically whatever fits in the long action and that I can get a bolt for. That will be a lot less expensive than buying multiple First focal plane scopes...

Nice shooting. What power was the magnification on the scope that you used?
