I have a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 first focal plane scope. I had a recent range trip and had the magnification at 16x. I didn't check it in the blind. Usually I dial it back to 6-8x to match the magnification of my binoculars, then increase it if I have time. At 130 yards my field of view was just fine, but different story with a dog running right to left and getting closer... For the distances involved (max range is 450 yards to the hillside) I think this scope is perfect. If I was shooting in the wide open spaces out west with longer range shots I might want something that goes 5-20.

I'm presently having a stainless match barrel put on my Rem 700 long action in 8mm Mauser. I was looking for a heavier caliber with some recoil for some extended range experience without breaking the bank. I happen to have some of the 70's to 99 M76 sniper ammo which I got at a way lower price than I can even reload 308 ammo, so it is primarily a learning tool. Interesting enough, the McGowan barrel I am getting installs on the Remington action with a Savage style nut, so in future I might have a few different barrels for that action - basically whatever fits in the long action and that I can get a bolt for. That will be a lot less expensive than buying multiple First focal plane scopes...

Nice shooting. What power was the magnification on the scope that you used?

Have done a few coons before , but after a few years they always seem to stink. Though I know people who'll eat the coons - not the coyotes.

you have to take the meat off the coons before you hang them on the wall! years ago I was pheasant hunting with a friend that spotted a pretty one and was told to hold his dog. He came out with something that I think weighed 30 lbs. Asked me to put it into his little bird vest. I unfortunately had a big carhart coat and game pouch. we were only about 3 miles from the truck and as long as I was hauling it, we only had to cover 20 more fields before we were done. Last time I ever wore that coat.

I ate the meat at a game feed once...I thought it was pretty tasty.

Nice shooting. We have a heck of a time getting them to show here....way too much cover & small fields.

This picture is from the blind looking NE The fence line one can see on the left is running due east/west. You can see it is a pretty expansive area and to the top of the hill on the right is 450 yards. The coyotes like to move down through that draw from the swamp on the left or from a heavy brush area to the right, then cross the creek and go up the hill to where the sheep have retreated at night.

This particular pair was shot facing in the opposite direction to this picture. There is a big patch of woods (pine plantation) directly in front of me at about 160 yards and in front of it there is a hardwood forest (new growth) with small stems 2" in diameter and about 8" apart. The female was in front of this sapling forest moving into the wind as they do and the male must have been a few feet further in the cover.

Bitter turtle? I've never seen that before. 7 different flavors of meat in a turtle. I've even grilled them on a Hibachi grill. Years ago I caught bunches of snapping turtles. The largest one I caught, the shell could almost be use for a lid one one of those old style galvanized garbage cans.

I'll make sure to send all the turtles I get to you guys. Been told I'm crazy by more folks than y'all - but I just don't like 'em. Taste like turdles! :yuck::thumbdown:
