credit union getting greedy

Many folks don't realize there are federal rules regarding electronic money transfers. You can go to the bank in person, or an ATM and make transfers out of your savings account as many times as you want. But you can't ELECTRONICALLY transfer money out of your savings account more than 6 times in a 4 week period. ELECTRONICALLY means internet and phone.

BTW, I've been with the same Credit Union for over 40 years. My mom got me in when I was a kid. I do my savings and checking there. But we did our mortgages and land loans at other financial institutions due to better rates. We now have a home equity line of credit with the Credit Union because they had the better rate. Also, better service overall. We have IRAs there, too.

I was not aware of this... I transfer money from savings to checking all the time electronically.

As to banks... my regular account was opened in 1948 and a couple of times it has made a difference. Once, the bank pulled the sig card and the person had never seen one this old...

I tried one credit union and found it unsatisfactory... to get the benefits you must use their bill pay and make 10 debit transaction per billing period... the mag strip on the card would not read and only had 9... forfeited all interest for that cycle and they would not budge... closed the account on the spot.

Have a different credit union now that seems to be OK... got everyone in the family an account too.. they have a 7% minors super saver account for kids... good for teaching my 7 year old niece about interest... $1000 in her account will give her $70 at the end of the year and now she is very aware on the subject of interest.

My credit union charges $1 per month for a checking account and then pays interest on the account at the beginning of the month...
For the most part, it is free checking since I get paid by the month...

Have belonged to the local credit union since 1972 and have always been very happy with them with one exception...now and then I need to pay via a money order because some places don't take a personal check, and my credit union charges $3-4 for a money order, while the local post office or Meijers stores charge some thing like 75 cents or a buck.

No one "needs" a bank or credit union pay cash live within your means ! if you have to finance it you can't afford it , and the fools who go out to dinner and use a credit card are just dumb as dirt , It's a fuuny thing how easy it is to spend what you don't have by using that little plastic card ,,If you had to pull cash out of your pocket all day long you would not be spending 1/2 as much as that little card .

You hit THAT ONE right on the head...it has always baffled me why people use plastic to pay for everything and then they claim "it's because we get 1% earnings when we use the card...." DUH. I recall something I saw on a tv program about sticking to a budget several years ago, and the host stated: "You will ALWAYS spend less when you open your wallet and put Uncle Ben on the counter instead of using a credit card." I have not paid a cent in interest or late fees on a credit card for 20 years, my ex paid something like $1200 in interest charges alone on her cards last year. Oh yes, she "earned" about $800 on her cards buying crap she didn't need in the first place.

I use a card for everything, and pay the bill in full every month, and then a few times a year i get a home depot gift card. so its a win win for me.Never assume because someone uses a card that they cant''afford'' something.but I can see your point, some dont pay the balance each month..

The point is you wouldn't be spending as much if you had to lay out the green ,it's the instant gratification lifestyle that gets people into trouble , No one needs a brand new house or a brand new truck or tractor ! You want one Not need one ,Are you living your life or to impress your neighbors ? see below

I didn't know that either, but since I've probably never done it more than 2 or 3 time in a year, I guess it doesn't matter. And I've still never used an ATM for anything except to get cash, and since I can do that at Walmart, Sam's Club, Kroger's, etc. with my Discover Card and pay no fees at all, I haven't used an ATM in a long time for anything.

Bird, since I have my pension and 457K plan withdrawals electronically deposited to my credit union accounts near the end of the month, I just drive thru and take $400-500 out of the ATM once a month, that's my spending cash and the CU is right next door to my regular grocery stop. I have never used a credit card for cash withdrawals, EVER since there is usually a fee for those. Interesting that you can use a Discover card for that purpose and not pay a fee. Is there any limit on the amount you can withdraw? (assumes you don't mind sharing that info, thanks)

Carry cash.
Lose cash (drop, robbed, house burned down, whatever)
Cash gone forever. Can't be replaced.

Carry plastic card.
Lose card (drop, robbed, house burned down, whatever)
Plastic card is replaced.
No cash lost.
Use it as debit card it is exactly the same as a check. You don't spend it if you don't have it.
Use it as a credit card and pay it off at the end of the month with no interest charge.

Plastic is an insurance policy against lost cash and keeping cash in a bank or credit union is a lost smarter than keeping it at home.
