We had an old Bush Hog brand 5fter on the farm when I was young and we had a seal on the bottom that leaked. Put in a tube of plain old gun grease and fill with 90 wt. It would hold long enough to clip 150 ac of pasture.

Man, as much as I love to bush hog I can not imagine doing 150 acres 5' at a time!

Note that he said when he was young!!!
My family did a lot of things when I was young that has since been replaced with a better way of doing it, simply because the kids were no longer home, and the need to keep them busy and out of trouble!

A lot of people call gear oil grease so that may be the "grease" people were putting in their rotary cutters.

I have a Herd seeder/ sander that I almost put grease in the gear box. The only reason I didn't was that the gear box faces up and I was a little worried that the upper bearing may not get as much lubrication with grease as it would with oil splashing about. I bought it used and the seeder fell over and all the oil leaked out of the vent. It didn't look like it was used without oil but I went through the gear box and replaced the seals and bearings. I also replaced both shafts since they were pitted. The cost was actually real cheap, maybe $60 for everything.

Since most guys have never seen or used grade 00 grease, they don't know that when the gears are turning, it flows like gear lube.

Our MF RF500 (Alamo built ) left the factory with 00 grease in the gearbox in the fall of 2009. Guessing the heavier duty mower have that over gear oil?

yep.. some of the heavier application might like that thin grease.

at work we have a huge mixer / reclaimer machine with 2 large chaindrive boxes on each side. those are specc'd to use ep 00/000 grease.
