I keep hearing from my local (experts) that synthetic creates leaks as opposed to dino . What do you think ? Just your thoughts here , let's not get crazy .

i believe that comes from the notion that the superior detergents and different film strength may clean up a dirty engine.. some of that varnish may be keeping old gaskets from leaking.

I've heard that before and the explanation given is that older engines (pre 80's) are not as tight internally. Thus the light syns blow by rings, seals and such. I'm not saying I buy into that but I see that as a point of argument

1st - after 15 years as a heavy line and diesel tech the only thing i run in my engines is full syn. run mobil 1 in gas, or syn rotella in diesel. i have torn down everything from a 3116 cat to little 4cylinder gas burners and what you put into the crankacase makes a huge difference on what you cant see going on inside the engine. fully syn. oil really does help keep the engine clean inside, which helps the oil get where it needs to be and do its job. It was funny, well to us, we could walk by an engine with the top off, see the tar like substance and say "jiffy lube", after that look at the oil change sticker and almost everythime it was some quick lube place.
As for syn creating leaks thats not so true any more, back when they first became popular the rtv (silicone) that was used in some engines, x-fer cases, and especially read diff's was not compatable with full syn oil and would "weap" not leak. difference being one looks wet, the other drips. i am pretty sure anything made past 98 has the newer formula rtv's. Now if you have a leak it seams full syn oil will leak more than dino oil.
unknowingly switched my b3030 from udt to sudt2, thought i s was just buying sudt. From what i am told the the sud2 is 75% syn, i would estimate that i gained 30% more power / speed with just a fluid change. i was completly amazed at the difference, loader is faster, hydro works better (able to run right up a slope i had to feather the throttle on before) and the unit is noticably quieter. To me tractors are extreme conditions, hours on end in the dirt and dust, hours on end at the same rpm, and pushed to their limit everytime they leave the barn. Grab a FEL or BH cylinder on a summer day after 2 hours of hard use and you will understand.

i hear some older gasket materials may not be compatible with the newer syn oils as well.

the use of synthetic oil and anarobic sealers have gone up together, makes you wonder if it's due to compatablity of the two. I know there is a huge difference in quality when it comes to rtv (silicone), the only thing i use on gas is gm orange thank god i still have a stash, and diesel i use isuzu black or grey both are almost like jb weld when proper prep is done. i have seen guys break tabs off of rocker covers trying to pry apart isuzu rtv.

My 1950 Ford 8N leaked oil before I started using synthetic. I have been using synthetic oil in the 8N since 1993. It still leaks, and at about the same rate. Personally for me, there is only one oil on my shelf, M1 5w-40, and it goes in everything I own from a 1950 tractor to a 2013 Honda. Philip.

My 2008 Honda Civic calls for 5W20. What Honda product are using the 5W40 in? Why do you feel the higher viscosity is better?

My 2009 Honda calls for 5w-20 and my wifes 2013 Honda calls for 0w-20. I use M1 5w-40 in both. Why? I like the extra protecton for higher operatings temps and harder usage. In the end, after the warranty runs out, it is my engine. Philip.
