speaking of Russians...

"We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to Communism, but
we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of
socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism." - Soviet
Leader Nikita Khrushchev, 1959

Another idea was running in Russia about what it was right after no radiation was found. Some say it was American cosmic debris. Vivid imagination!

many countries have to control their people via propaganda and pressure. easier to handle if they think the world is evil and out to get them and only thr govt is standing betweent hem and obliteration.

My wife travels the world, and in but a few rare instances... many indigenous populations she has seen live under an iron rule, and have a less then real perception of the wold outside their country.

look at north korea. speakers int ehri homes blasting propaganda...

One of the major concerns during the Cold War was a meteor hitting the USSR or the US and being mistaken for a nuclear attack.
Although such a strike wouldn't have radiation, the explosion would be similar to the nuke going off...and something like that could have resulted in an accidental war.

It's a good thing this object exploded at 15 miles altitude. In 1908, a meteor or comet that exploded 3-6 miles over Tunguska, Russia (see: Tunguska event - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and flattened several hundred square miles of trees. Think about if it had happened over the eastern coast of the US...or Europe.

We would probably all be french fries if that had happened during the height of the cold war. Reagan scared the crap out of the Russians and they were in full panic mode as a result.

I have always been amazed the US and other countries try to negotiate with N. Korea. It is a futile exercise and the only benefit for such talks is so that the US can go to other counties and say we tried. In the mean time, millions die of starvation and torture, while N. Korea builds nukes, apparently is weaponizing them, and building delivery systems. The flip side is there really is NOTHING the US and its allies can do but sanctions which cannot stop the N. Koreans, sanctions can only slow them down.

What is interesting is that this latest bomb test is supposed to have really ticked off the Chinese. The Chinese stated to the public that N. Korea should not do the bomb test. The N. Korean test is likely going to have repercussions. Many of the N. Korean leadership have been removed from power and/or disappeared. The question is why? Certainly it is partly the New Thug In Charge(NTIC) putting in people who are loyal to him. However, China has strong influence in N. Korea which means they have people in leadership positions who might be inclined to throw a coup with the help of China. Is the NTIC removing anyone who might be too close to the Chinese? Supposedly, China has been pushing N. Korea to have Chinese style economy that is sorta free as long as it does not endanger the Chinese Communist Party(CCP). The N. Koreans have refused to do this, so their people starve, corruption increases, and N. Korea continues to fracture.

At some point, the CCP might get tired of the mess in N. Korea. There are millions of ethnic Koreans in the Chinese border regions and the Chinese are obsessed with the idea of domestic harmony. The CCP knows that historically, when the peasants get piss....ed off enough, the party in power disappears. Domestic harmony is very important to the CCP. Will the CCP invade, or sponsor a coup in N. Korea, so the CCP can keep the N. Korean mess out of China? I would think the CCP very well might. They have done it before after all. If so, the CCP would likely have a coup before the N. Koreans have a weaponized nuke. Tick Tock Tick Tock.

Later,
Dan

I spent a few days in Tague Korea (DMZ). Can't remember for the life of me what I did except muster each morning and head to the club for a American breakfast. Four days later, bused over to Olson AFB and we flew our airplanes But North/South Korea have sercured boarders.
