Having spent two tours in Iraq, I have a whole new respect for dogs. There was a General Order of no FOB pets, but the smart 1st SGTs ignored it and let their guys keep stray pups they raised. Not only were the locals afraid of the dogs, but the dogs were used on patrols...they are MUCH smarter than us at knowing when things were not right. They also brought comfort to many guys over there, including myself. Many an MRE was shared with those guys! I learned animals are inherently a whole heck of a lot nicer than people!
No way I would (or could now) put a dog down like you did, especially talk about it the way you did. But everyone has their own experiences and sees things differently, it is just an animal to many. At least you did help the dog and end it's suffering. Only thing worse is all the dogs I see around me chained up or in a small kennel, never getting attention or let to run a little in their lives.
