Shot my neighbors dog

Having spent two tours in Iraq, I have a whole new respect for dogs. There was a General Order of no FOB pets, but the smart 1st SGTs ignored it and let their guys keep stray pups they raised. Not only were the locals afraid of the dogs, but the dogs were used on patrols...they are MUCH smarter than us at knowing when things were not right. They also brought comfort to many guys over there, including myself. Many an MRE was shared with those guys! I learned animals are inherently a whole heck of a lot nicer than people!;)

No way I would (or could now) put a dog down like you did, especially talk about it the way you did. But everyone has their own experiences and sees things differently, it is just an animal to many. At least you did help the dog and end it's suffering. Only thing worse is all the dogs I see around me chained up or in a small kennel, never getting attention or let to run a little in their lives.

Once again, the dog was sick. She was obviously in pain ever time she tried to walk. I like animals and I will not let one suffer needlessly.

I doubt if it would have lived another pain filled miserable week.

Would you be cruel enough to let it lay and suffer?

I don't think many would argue that the dog was in a bad state of health. What is un needed was your description. Or even the mention of it at all. Something's are better left unsaid, this is one of them

Ditto. I think the entire post is inappropriate. :(

I couldn't have said it better myself...It's one thing to put an animal down, quite another to show the animal the disrespect of describing it like you enjoyed the whole process...Aren't there moderators watching for this stuff?

Putting down an animal that is part of the family is hard. The description that the original poster eluded to may be a coping mechanism, because it does cause grief, even if not your pet.

I don't agree that the post was inappropiate in general. This is a farrm/rural life/etc oriented web site and animal husbandry is all part of that. I agree we could do without the graphics but suggest we back off and let it go as there for the grace of god go I. Those who do not have the stomach for it or have not had to, consider yourself fortunate. It may be not part of your life but it is for others. We lost a horse the other day to colick and old age. We worked with that animal for over three hours until the vet could make it thinking there might have been a chance. Had the horse broken a leg, there would have been no wait. I would have had to take care of it. Unfortuately, when the vet came and we got the animal sedated to negate the pain, when he palpatated her, she was full of tumors so we chose to put her down. A correctly place gunshot would have been just as quick and perhaps safer because when a horse goes down after the shot to stop the heart, it can be anything but graceful. Inappropiate applies to the neighbors who allowed their so called beloved pet to deteriorate to such a state.

I lost my Siberian Husky a year ago after having him for almost 17 years. He was blind and could not hear anymore. He knew me though by smell and could find me anywhere. His hips started to go on him and that is when I decided I had to put him down no matter how hard it was. I did give him gluecosimine in his food to help some with the swelling but with his age it did not help much. On a Wednesday I called the Vet and they scheduled him for Friday. Thursday evening I came home. He usually meets me in the driveway. I guess he had some kind of internal clock. On this day however he was not there. I couldn't call him because he couldn't hear. So I went out looking for him. After about an hour I found him in our woods about 100 yards from our house. I felt sick!! I often wonder and hope that I was not one of these people that hung on too long.

I am 6'6" 250, 43 years old and a veteran. I am not ashamed to say I cried when I found him as well as the whole time I was burying him... I have had many dogs over the years but Coty was not a pet. He was my buddy. I still miss him.. Ok enough of this.

I am glad you put the dog out of his misery. I don't think I could have done that. We have horses and I dread the day that I will have to make that decision as well.

Through necessity I have killed a lot of animals in my time. I have been livestock farming for over 60 years with over 2000 head at times. Anyone who keeps any animal should be capable of killing that animal quickly and painlessly. Unfortunately many who claim to be "animal lovers" refuse to do so and allow their animals to suffer, just as this dog had done for too long. I believe these sorts of people should be prosecuted - a farmer would be.

As CBW1999 posted at #50 the dog was dead as soon as the bullet went through its head, but I too thought some of the detail of the OP was unnecessary, and not just the remark about the bullet passing right through it. Overall, I feel the same as Ted Summey posted at #43.
