Do you wave?

Question, when approaching a vehicle it seems to me that if I look the driver in the eye (distance too great to actually see eyes) then they are much more likely to wave before I wave. Does anyone else have this "feeling" or am I just imaging things?

I think you are right- sometimes it is just a nod, or a single finger lifted off the wheel - local people more than somebody from out of the area.
On motorcycles- people generally wave to each other- but there it sometimes is about class! The harley guy doesn't wave to a guy on a riceburner suzuki, and the guy on a Honda Goldwing doesn't see the guy on a crotch rocket!

As a kid, a car would go by our house maybe once a day. When we were young we'd watch it go by from behind the large round maples- circling to keep it in sight, but be out of sight at the same time. You'd hear the car coming before you could see it. Living on a small dirt road gaives you a different perspective than it does today.

I live in kind of a weird area. The road I live on has a bunch of 5 to 20 acre ranchettes on it, but all of that is in the middle of a major metro area and there are subdivisions within a mile of the house.

There is a guy who lives near me that does custom hay cutting/bailing/hauling for places up and down the road. I will see him drive by in a large Kubota cab farm tractor with a mower, bailer or whatever on the back. If I'm out on my CUT, I will wave at him but never get a wave back. Not sure if he is a tractor snob or what.

Then again, maybe I'm over-thinking it. He is probably just bent over, steering with his knee, lighting a cigarette and doesn't even see me.

Or, it COULD be because I'm on a John Deere......

As for cars, nobody waves because it's in the city, which is kind of sad.

My drive is where a country road hits a highway. I wave to those on the smaller road. Those on the larger road are going too fast and rarely even see me. But I also wave as I drive sometimes. I give a wave to police, local trucks, equipment operators and those in beat-up trucks. I also wave at school bus drivers. It's something my father always did. I don't know where it started, but it has the ring of good nature I would like to see more often... So I wave.

I always wave to cops and firetrucks too, ever since I was a little kid even though (waaaay) back then it was pretty rare to see either one.

I rarely wave mainly because when I am driving I'm not looking into vehicles to see if I know the occupants...I'm devoting my attention to traffic and my driving.

Yes I wave at people driving by or if I am driving around town I wave.

I remember as a teen working at an Amoco station on Rt 17 south just below the Virginia line in NC. In the fall and spring we got a lot of Canadians from the Montreal and Toronto areas. Most of those from the Toronto area were very friendly, outgoing and were wavers, most of the Quebecer's were just the opposite. Very aloof, and not friendly as a rule. Some were exclusively French speaking so I understand that to a degree, but the difference in the those from Ontario and those from Quebec was day and night. Being an old country boy we just thought they were snobs!
