the small cross section of a brass seat into that carb body should shear with hand pressure if needed.

the most important issue is using a hollow ground screwdriver.. not a spade point. spade points can slip out.

For those who may not know what a hollow ground screwdriver is, it's ground flat on the tip and sides, unlike a standard screwdriver which is tapered on the sides. Further reading below...

What Is A Hollow Ground Screwdriver?

awe everyone knows what a HG screwdriver is (wink) ;)

I believe the main point here is using the correct sized screwdriver so as to not booger up the slot, be it hollow or not.

Sinkholes come to mind.. :)

and to use the correct sized screwdriver.. it pretty much HAS to be hollow ground. if it isn't, the you have a play at the base of the jet slot.. spades slip out easier than the flat tipped HG. they made them for a reason... guns and carbs are 2 good reasons.. :)

Does HG come in only one size. A smaller sized (wrong size) HG would have produced the same negative results was my point.

HG are like any other.. they come in sizes / sets.

Proper tip is what's needed. IE.. the proper fitting HG tip. that's the BEST way to install and remove those seats.

I never said to use one too small.

As Jerry mentioned above. With heat. Proper fitting screwdriver and he'll have no problem. A HG will still booger up a brass fitting if not properly used. Filing the end of your screwdriver for a cleaner fit helps as well. A brass fiting shouldn't be so tight that what happened in his case. Heat will aid that, plus dressing up his screwdriver (proper size) will be a big plus.

Soaked with PB after meeting resistance. I hadn't thought about an easy out. I'll use that as my last option as I'm worried about the threads of the carb body.

Have not heard of that product, will look for it. I can see it coming in handy for other projects as well. After the screwdriver slipped and started leaving marks on the brass, I quit. I thought I should ask some questions before I really screwed it up.

.

You can get CRC Freeze-Off at Amazon.com, some auto parts stores, etc.

It works fine. I just removed the last three badly rusted 5/8x3" threaded studs from the rear axle of my 1949 JD B today using Freeze-Off. Those studs were stuck good--tried WD-40, PB Blaster, Mouse Milk, Liquid Wrench, 50/50 ATF/acetone. Nada. Didn't try heat because the axle is cast steel and I worry about cracking it with concentrated heat.

Got a can of Freeze-Off. Put two 5/8 nuts on the stud, tightened the stud to try to break the rust in the threads, whacked the end of the stud a few times with a BFH, sprayed Freeze-Off on the stud for a minute or so where the stud met the axle housing, used my longest 15/16 open end wrench to tighten the stud, then reversed the motion to loosen the stud. Put all my weight on the wrench and the rusted stud threads broke loose and the stud came out. No damage to the threads in the axle housing. Took about 5 minutes.

ps.. heat on that jd axle iron casting ( the stud actually ) would not have hurt anything.

glad they came out.

another option is to drill the center to release pressure too.

weld a nut on.. etc.. etc..

I have a 50 I played with.. same deal.. :)
