Broken HST/ No Reverse= HUGE $ to Fix!

Any chance a stick might have knocked a certain electrical plug loose underneath by the pedal linkage, causing an error 99 code? It happened to me. I reattached it and got reverse back.

I would definitely take the lower cost labor approach but not purchase any parts or a new HST until they actually identify the problem. Might not need either expensive parts or a new HST at all once they get in there. Very strange for reverse only to give trouble. I don't really know anything about these things, but would seem if you have pressure to go forward but not backward the problem is somewhere other than the pumps.

What about searching for somebody who would do the labor free/reduced cost for the experience? Maybe a mechanic school, surely people have to learn how to do this at places other than factory classes. Risk of a botched job should be reduced if you replace whole thing.

Just an idea...no idea if there is such a place in your area.
That's a thought. The tech college in Nashua replaced the clutch on my tractor when the former owner had it. Curtis lists Southern NH so can't be too far away.

I don't know, I kind of equate that with getting a haircut at the beauty college, except your hair will grow back.

The only way I would consider that, is if I had an inside contact that I trusted to watch over the repairs.

Even than, I dont know that I would sent a HST in. Gear, yes but a HST has a lot more that they could mess up not keeping things clean enough and that might not show up for a while.

I would not consider letting anyone but a qualified mechanic fix it as the cost is so high and if you have to resplit the machine, your screwed. I did pick the machine up yesterday and drove it, makes me think there is a bad O ring somehwere as there is very, very faint reverse, forward is fine. Have had a few offers to buy it broken and the buyers want to fix it themselves. At the right price it would be a good deal for someobe with that capability of fixing it themselves. I ams elling it without BH as I am keeping it for my new L48. New M59 without BH is $39k and change. Been thinking about just fixing it as there is no other machine besides a M59 that has the capabilities as a L48, and I need those capabilities.

Posted on a new thread I started RE Tier 4:

Looked at new machines yesterday, specifically M7040, M59, and the M8560/9660. The new emmission stuff is scary to contemplate buying. I have a newer Ford F450 dumper with all the emmission stuff and wish it didn't and now looking at tractors I feel the same way. The last batch of M7040s without the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and other junk are still available but not so for anything bigger. As I consider what to do about my ailing L48 (fix/sell) I am now concerned if I don't do something soon I will be forced into one of these DPF tractors as I was told very shortly anything but 25HP and less will all be the DPF way. Don't have the $ to fix L48 if big fix and buy new machine. Thoughts on the new DPF machines Tier 4?

As a side not, I just finished plowing 3 hours with my new L48 and it did remind me that HST is the way to go when doing repetitive tasks such as plowing and loader work. I had been wondering how a shuttle shift would tickle my fancy in this application and I am convinced HST is better for me. BUT.....L48/M59 are the biggest machines with HST and anything else will be shuttle.

sounds to me like they tried to "blow you out of the water", in atempt to get your business in sales. I would go a little higher up the food chain at the dealer and see if you can persude them to keep your business especially with the current equipment you own. I would say you are defianlty a valued customer and perhaps Kubota would like to hear your story.
My next purchase will me either a l39 or l45 and i am very curious about the failures assocated with these. Please keep us posted with this useful info

Update on the Broken L48. I sold the machine to a TBN member who plans to fix the machine himself. I ended up buying a new M7040 HDC-1 to beat the Tier 4 emmission stuff coming out soon. From what I was told, this was the last batch of 7040s without the DPF and all the 8540s and 9540s are gone. Upon comparison those were too big a tractor for my needs. I sold the machine broken as I felt it was time for a leap of faith into a different class machine as I still have a brand new L48 with BH. I will not disclose the selling price as to avoid a you should have gotten more or the buyer paid too much. We both think we got a mutually beneficial deal and those are the best deals. The buyer is a great guy, he is on this board often, and a type of guy that you meet in life that you wish lived closer. He had lots of orange machines and I could see hanging out with him after work. He intends to fix it and hopefully he will start a thread detailing the process. Before selling I went through the parts diagrams and I think it is a problem with the piston servo which looks like an external fix, but who knows, it could be something major. I took the plunge and hopefully my new machine will be here tomorrow before the storm. I went cab, R4s, single remote, no radio, or defogger.....just saved every penny I had to get into a new machine. Thanks for everyones input. Best regards, Curtis Farmer
