Paint Guns

Thanks Guys! I'll be at HF when they open in the morning. Do the gravity feed with top cup guns let you paint directly overhead without spilling paint out the vent? Otherwise I can not see using a gravity cup gun (HVLP) in all the confined framework under the disc. That top cup would keep hitting 1/2 inch steel. That is why I am leaning to a siphon cup gun.

The paint is Majic Implement IH RED with it's own reducer and seperate hardener additive. Thinner for cleanup. Back in the old days in aviation, it was MEK to cleanup and help Imron paint "kick" faster. Now all we at work is Acetone.

I have one old air/oil seperator, but am planning on installing another one right before the hose QD.
40 psi is what I remember on the guns I have used.

You may want to check out the needle scaler pneumatic guns to clean up that old rusty metal while at HF. They are good for corners that you cant get brushes or grinders into. They work pretty good for removing weld slag too.

I spray a lot of Gel-coat...IMO the tips are far more important then the gun...most of the tips on the cheapo guns are trash after the first couple of uses...
If you examine the orifices with a high power magnifying lens you see how they get etched out of shape from the solids in the material...

on the top cup guns.. I usually hold the cup on and cover the port when doing the occasional striaght up shots.

a pressure pot is about the only way to do straight up shooting... but they cost more.

if i was you.. I'd get that frame hoisted and paint without stooping..

I paint upside down--or at least on a strong angle--with the gravity gun. Separately, you mention the use of hardener, which is a very dangerous isocyanate product that can cause lung damage on the first use. You surely sound smart enough and experienced to know this so just thought to toss it out on the long shot chance you don't.

Thanks Gary. The rust is up under the nooks and crannys and I'm not worried about it. Too much like work attacking that. Only reason I am painting up in there is the existing coats of paint look a little thin.

I understand. I checked out the cheap gun at TSC this morning. It's nozzle is way narrow, compared to what I have used in the past. The more and more I think about it, I might pick up a touch up gun at HF. They are way faster and easier to clean up than a quart spray gun. Great for uh, well, touching up when you are out of spray bombs!
Lost my good Snap-On one in the pawn shop during my long ago divorce.

I've held fingers over the vent holes intermittantly on siphon guns when painting bellies and lower side of wings on airliners in the past. It is doable, but an acute angle is way faster.

The disc frame is blocked up on two cinder blocks and a 2x4. I could raise it a little more I guess. I'll have to see if it needs to go higher after I get a HF creeper under there and decide then. Neck pains are not wanted. Maybe I can raise it up enough to just wear my knee pads.

Thanks Sixdogs. My old respirator was so old, I threw it out when I moved tools from my old workshop to the new barn shop. I have to borrow a new one from work. Do you really think I need the hardener? It says it gives it more of a gloss.

I have had good luck with using the better quality acrylic enamel available from the Case dealer. You did say Case red I think. Anyway, it's a better quality of paint than the TSC and it has a better gloss to it. The isocyanates mentioned won't be stopped by a respirator but need supplied air. There have been discussions and threads about this. Yes, hardener gives a gloss but knowing what I know I would skip the hardener and use a dealership acrylic enamel.
