...we're planning on getting some stout deadbolts to add on to them. Anybody have suggestions on that- e.g., brand, part#, or one to avoid, etc?

No brands etc, however, get the wrap around door reinforcing that go under the dead bolts. Also, buy or make oversize strike plates and use screws long enough to get into the framing.

I've got one **** of a bolt/screw bin. Lots from when dad built a few houses (he's a "well-organized hoarder") and when I worked at West Marine over 10 years, I always picked up what customers dropped on the floor in the fastener aisle. Cool thing about that was most of it was stainless.

That said, my "go to" is the fridge...for a cold beer when working :) Always seem to open that door more than a few times during projects!

and a great FM Stereo & station to listen to .....

I was going to post that one. Whether I'm in the garage, the basement shop, or out in the backyard I have to have something to listen to. I don't know what it is, but it even makes crappy tasks a little more enjoyable.

Telephone with caller I.D. that announces who is calling. It lets you know who is trying to talk to you when you are in the middle of a project that can't be set down. It lets you talk to the important people and ignore the nuisance callers.

My dad never throws anything away. He has a huge shop full of anything and everything. He has a part or tool for every possible scenario. Problem is, when he needs something he can't find it or forgot he had one and buys another. Me, I have a clean, well organized shop, and iPad, wifi, and the most important tool in the world......a McMaster account! Anything I need is at my finger tips and only one day away. It takes me 5 minutes to order something and the clutter in my shop is non existent. Also having an iPad is great for having access to repair manuals, etc and you don't have to store mountains of old greasy manuals.

For our barn I have a strikemaster plate in the door, 6'' stainless screws in the hinges a better deadbolt, and anti-shatter film on all the windows.

Thanks for the tips!

I had not thought much about window security, but those films sound like a great idea.

Is there any downside to them-? decreased clarity or increased problems cleaning them?

What brand deadbolt did you use, if you can remember (or can take a look next time you're out there)?

Thanks,
Thomas

I bought 4mil from eBay sellers. There is no loss in clarity, unless you want that. Excellent UV rejection 90% VLT, virtually clear, blocks 99% of UV rays.

To put it in (I have it on all windows and doors in our house also), I first mix up 2 tsp of baby shampoo in a spray bottle and spray the window.
Then I use a razor scraper to scrape the glass clean, stopping about 1/8 of an inch from the edge of the window (you don't want to push the dirt into the frame).
then I wipe down the window with a lint free cloth.
I then spray the window again and squeegee it wiping the squeegee off every time. Now the window is clean.
I spray the window lightly one more time and then get the film ready. No dust around it I normally do it on a table that has been wiped clean. As you are pulling the backing film off spray the film so no static builds up. If it does it will attract dust/lint/etc. Now you put the wet film on the wet window. I take a plastic scraper and go over the film once, then I cut it to size. When using the scraper (like a squeegee) stop 1/8'' from edge. After it is cut to fit in the frame I then go back over the film with the scraper wrapped in a towel and really press.
Then its recommended that after it dries to go around and put some clear silicone over the edge so its connected to the frame.
How to apply Window Film - YouTube is one video I used to help learn how to do it.
Remlor 4 Mil Safety Security Window Film 30" x 25 Ft | eBay was the ebay seller I used. Very helpful.
Its not cheap but when you figure the larger mils are used for blast proofing and bullet proofing this is a bit of peace of mind. It was also part of our over all security plan.
I would say to start on a small window that is out of the way, that will let you get the mechanics down. Its not that difficult, just time consuming you do not want dust motes on your window being trapped where you can see them.

....deleted for brevity.... can see them.

Hi ForgeBlast,

Thanks so very much, I have been meaning to film all our house windows for UV protection too!

We really appreciate the source and how-to links!

BTW, I think I read some of your posts on the welding web and weren't you even the one who put up the link to there on TBN?

I appreciate all the welding tips etc, too.

I'm on the welding web email list now and saving all the videos for future reference.
