F-150 Eco Boost Towing Vs Nissan Titan

My Tundra is a 2007 double cab SR5 5.7 V8 4x4. According to PickupsTrucks.com about the 2014 Tundra "We should note right up front that there are no structural changes to the frame or chassis, no additions to the existing wheelbase or cab configurations, and no changes to the existing three powertrains."

The changes are to the trim packages and interior. Seems to me they should have gone with a direct injection engine to increase power and gas mileage.

What do you mean "serious issue". Never seen or heard of this happening and i am on a lot of forums. Please post the source for these pictures so we can see the whole story.

I have heard of the condensation issue with the tsb but this looks fishy.

Google TSB 12-10-19. This is a known issue that Ford has acknowledged and has modified the current year trucks to fix.

Every manufacturer has TSB's

Pick a " pet brand" and google recalls/TSB's.

Here a TSB/recall notice about dodges loosing an axle pinion nut that cause a lockup when it occurs. Apparently this TSB covers 278,000 vehicles.

Report Receipt Date: FEB 06, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V038000
Component(s): POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 278,222

Vehicle Make - Model - Model Year(s)

CHRYSLER ASPEN 2009
DODGE DAKOTA 2009-2011

DODGE RAM 1500 2009-2012

Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC

SUMMARY

Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Ram 1500 trucks manufactured from February 27, 2008, through June 30, 2009, and from December 1, 2009, through October 20, 2011; model year 2009-2011 Dodge Dakota trucks manufactured from February 27, 2007, through June 30, 2009, and from December 1, 2009, through September 30, 2011; model year 2009 Chrysler Aspen trucks manufactured from January 3, 2008, through December 18, 2008; and model year 2009 Dodge Durango trucks manufactured from January 3, 2008, through December 18, 2008. Like I said in my earlier post no ecoboost thread is complete without some TSB post and a picture of a problem somewhere from some guy about something.

Like I said, I am familiar with the TSB. I wanted a source for your pictures because they are over the top extreme for anything I have ever seen. Are they from your personal truck? How could this much water accumulate? What is the source of the oil? Why is it that color? Why would it freeze in a heated air supply? All questions I would like to have answered from just curiosity reasons. This is definitely extreme so I am labeling it "fishy" until I see the source.

I can see it freezing up. Much like carb ice in a small airplane.

I do agree it looks odd.

This thread is really typical of most ecoboost threads Ive participated in.

1) Guy talk about how great mileage their old non DPF equipped 3/4 ton diesels that cost 20K more and ride like crap unloaded get.
2) Guys talk about a problem the EB had on a forum post somewhere, but ignore their own trucks issues and but haven't driven an EB, or towed with one.
3) Guys minimize what amounts to about a 20% gain in towing economy as "not impressive" when in fact its pretty amazing.
4)Guys say its overly complicated and compare it to "proven" older designs.
5)Guys compare peak torque and HP and tend to ignore whats on tap at 1900-2K (where ecoboost makes huge torque)
6)Guys that dont tow at altitude and in extreme heat dont have experience with how much an NA truck loses.

7)Discussion on paper dont translate into how quiet and calm the EB cabin is when towing.

Uncle Dave

I added numbers to make it easier to compare the points you made, not trying to nitpick just want to provide my thoughts, id love to hear your thoughts on my thoughts

1) yes my non-emissions truck gets reasonable mileage and yes it rides like it has metal tires, no argument there. I did however buy it for less than 20k, but that's mainly a used vs new point

2) my truck has many many issues that are very well know in the diesel world and it cost about 10k to get them squared away properly, so certainly no bias against the EB in that respect

3) totally agree with you 20% increase in efficiency towing or not is a big deal, all the power and better mpg, who wouldn't want that?

4) agree with you, direct injection and turbo charging are not new technology by a long shot, we've had direct injection since 1893 and wide spread use of turbocharging for increased power and efficiency in trucks since 1989. Ford is just the first to adopt this technology to the gas truck world

5) absolutely, you don't want to have your engine wound out all the time just to maintain speed pulling a load, I have 800ft/lbs of torque coming on at 1600rpm and let me tell you towing is a breeze like that.

6) 3% loss per 1000ft on a naturally aspirated engine , enough said

7) I watched your video, that truck is very, very quiet especially when towing, I had to watch closely to see when it down shifted because you couldn't hear it
Sorry for the long post everyone

Here we go. Photos are from the first link. I included a second link that is referenced in the first.

I think you have a solid handle of whats going on.

Curious...Do you have a Ford 6.0 Diesel?

800 ft/lb is a lot - thats right about what my cat 3126 powered motorhome makes!

I'm just trying to keep an open minded discussion about the EB, it seems all to often people put their blinders on when talking about trucks.
Nope a 01 dodge but I have done quite a bit of aftermarket work to it

I wish I could get a Cummins engine, with an Allison trans, in a Ford body....

When towing in hills the NA trucks need a lot of revs- Im not saying they over rev, but spend 30 minutes inside a titan or an even higher revving 5.3/5.0 and you can understand the vast diff in cabin noise the EB. You really cant carry on conversations or take phone calls- a big deal for us office guys sneaking out to the lake early on a Friday....

Take the 3% for the 1000 ft and add in another % or 2 per degree over 100 - when you add the two it gets brutal pretty quick.
