F-150 Eco Boost Towing Vs Nissan Titan

Great video's Dave.

So what trucks have you owned? It seems you had a Ram, then a Titan, and I assume now a Eco Boost.

Chris

Thanks, the guys on the Titan forums hate me now.

Ive owned in order

88 Chevy 1500 w/ a 350
93 Ford lightning F150 350
2001 Suburban with a 5.3
2004 Titan w/ 4:11 and big tow
2013 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 dually (the wifes "truck")

I run in a pretty large boating and offroading circle and do a bit or side "fun" work for Perfomanceboats magazine.
Just about everything is represented in it, and I get to try just about every truck in some form or another.

The Hemi - like the ecoboost you see in the video is a friends truck bought at the same time as the titan.
Ive pulled the same blue boat and my toyhauler with it as found its almost identical to the Titan except its cabin tech wasn't as good back in 05

I have not bought an ecoboost, but If I were buying another half ton - that would be it.

This thread is really typical of most ecoboost threads Ive participated in.

Guy talk about how great mileage their old non DPF equipped 3/4 ton diesels that cost 20K more and ride like crap unloaded get.
Guys talk about a problem the EB had on a forum post somewhere, but ignore their own trucks issues and but haven't driven an EB, or towed with one.
Guys minimize what amounts to about a 20% gain in towing economy as "not impressive" when in fact its pretty amazing.
Guys say its overly complicated and compare it to "proven" older designs.
Guys compare peak torque and HP and tend to ignore whats on tap at 1900-2K (where ecoboost makes huge torque)
Guys that dont tow at altitude and in extreme heat dont have experience with how much an NA truck loses.

Discussion on paper dont translate into how quiet and calm the EB cabin is when towing.

The heard the new "hemi" truck with the highest tow rating does not have the 8 speed. (confirmation? )

The new chevies look nice with direct injection, cylinder deactivation, and variable timing.
Although single cam "timing" cannot independently vary the intake and the exhaust, it can only advance or ****** both at the same time as they are connected to a single cam. The EB has a wider range of adjustability.

The new chevy 5.3 is nice, but EB is much stronger especially at low RPMs.
Funny how with less hp and TQ it now carries an 11500 rating 300 higher than the better performing ecoboost equivalent.
The new chevy 6.2 will likely produce more TQ and HP but it will have to spin faster to do it - louder cabin, less mileage when towing.
I doubt it will give you 400 ft lb at 1900/2K. It will likely get better mileage on the freeway running in 3.1L mode.

Chevy is trying to call its engines "proven" and all new at the same time.
They also say the EB is a "car" engine, but if one uses that logic then a vette engine is a "truck" engine.

Since I don't own a chevy ford or dodge at the moment, it's easy to be objective.

We'll see.

There is one serious issue with the Ecoboost that is causing quite a bit of warranty and performance issues;

Looks like a radiator/cooler problem, but Im not familiar with the chunking.

Also - matches line 3 of my post 92. Par for the course.

What the heck is that?
I've heard one owner complain about a broken motor mount, but otherwise mostly positive.

It's ice mixed with a little oil blocking the intercooler. Anyone who drives these trucks routinely at or about freezing when it's humid should be aware of this. It takes out the cat(s) when it thaws. There is a TSB on the issue and a intercooler design change to try to minimize it. Same thing happening with the newer tdi VW's that use air to air intercoolers. In VW's it will hydrolock the motor....

TSB Information:

3.5L GTDI—INTERMITTENT STUMBLE/MISFIRE ON TSB 12-10-19
ACCELERATION FROM HIGHWAY CRUISE IN HUMID
OR DAMP CONDITIONS WITH POSSIBLE DTC

FORD:
2011-2012 F-150

This article supersedes TSB 12-6-4 to remove the production fix date, update the Title, Issue Statement, Part List and Service Procedure.

ISSUE
Some 2011-2012 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) EcoBoost engine may exhibit an intermittent engine surge during moderate to light loads at cruise, stumble and/or misfire on hard acceleration after an extended drive at highway speeds during high humid or damp conditions. This could result in a steady or flashing malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) primarily for misfire P0300, P0304, P0305, P0306. DTCs P0430 and/or P0299 may also be present.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Insure all hard fault powertrain DTCs are addressed prior to performing the calibration update.

1. Check for DTC P0430. Is DTC P0430 present?
a. Yes - Replace the left catalytic converter assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 309-00. Proceed to Step 2.
b. No - Proceed to Step 2.
2. Is the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) equipped with an air deflector plate?
a. Yes - Proceed to Step 5.
b. No - Proceed to Step 3.
3. Install a new CAC, new air deflector plate, and original shield using new retaining pushpins. Refer to WSM, Section 303-12. Proceed to Step 4.
4. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS release 79.02A or higher. This new calibration is not included in the 2012.5 Calibration files may also be obtained at Buy Motorcraft Parts Online | Official Motorcraft Auto Parts Site | FordParts.com.
5. Install a new CAC and the original air deflector plate and shield using new retaining pushpins. Refer WSM, Section 303-12.

What do you mean "serious issue". Never seen or heard of this happening and i am on a lot of forums. Please post the source for these pictures so we can see the whole story.

I have heard of the condensation issue with the tsb but this looks fishy.

I think the Ecoboost is a great new engine design and maybe the first in a long line of even better gas motors. I am not a big fan of the Ford's (just don't care for the styling and lay out for some reason - nothing wrong with it, just not what I want) but I have to commend Ford for bringing us a different choice in motors! It is things like this that help move the entire market forward.

I agree. I also commend Dodge for taking a chance with a new suspension and tranny. Just like you its not for me but at least they are being innovative.

GM had a chance to do something but chose to take the safe route again. I can not wait to see what the new Titan and Tundra have to offer.
