Hydraulic cylinder sizing ??

I am not sure you understand how a regular log splitter works.

They are designed to split the log while you hold the lever in the fwd position, and when the log is split, you pull the lever to rev and it goes into detent with hands off.

When the pressure builds up to a set pressure, about 1100 psi, the reverse lever will auto return to neutral.

You do not want to detent a valve using a log splitter if not designed to work that way.

What the 3 position detent does is to lock the lever in one of the three position.

In the fwd and rev position, the relief would activate when the cyl gets to the end of the stroke, and the fluid would heat up quickly.

The only other valve that I know of other than the Prince auto valve, is used on the two way splitters, and they use a spring to center valve for the log splitter valve.

I would recommend that you use the regular log splitter valve and the two spool valve for the log lift and cap off the other spool on the two spool valve.

No bungee necessary..

So If I install the detent on the splitter side of the valve,,, can't I just not engage the detent while I'm splitting and then on retract engage it,, I know the splitter now you can retract the cylinder without engaging the detent ????

Yes, you can manually control the valve, but if you are going to do that, why have detent on a log splitter valve.

You really don't have a need for a lock and hold detent on a log splitter valve.

On my logsplitter I utilized the cylinder retract detent so as cylinder was retracting while I picked up a new log to put on splitter.

That is true, because a log splitter valve has a pressure release detent built in, but on a 3 position detent valve, the lever will stay in detent until you pull the lever back, and the relief valve will activate and stay activated until you pull the lever back.

I'm not familiar with the terminology 3 position valve therefore I have a question. So in essence you're stating a 3 position valve will remain in the detented position IE will not kick out of detent when cylinder reaches it's full stroke and pressure spikes such as my log splitter? If my assumption is correct what is the advantage(application) of a 3 position valve over a regular valve? Thanks,Jim

A detent valve will run a motor all day until you pull the lever back. Either direction.

Say you have a remote with a detent valve, and you want to use a log splitter on the remote circuit. Push or pull the valve in detent and use the log splitter. No bungee required

The avg valve is spring to center. When you release the lever, the spool goes to neutral, or center.

Thank you for your reply. I knew what a detented valve is but had never encountered a 3 detent valve in my ag tractor experiences.Jim

So what your saying is I can use the 3 position detent on my log splitter it just won't kick out at end of stroke...

The answer is yes you can, but the relief valve will activate when the cyl is fully extended or fully retracted.

A detent valve is normally used with a constantly flowing fluid like a hyd motor.

I think I would go with a regular log splitter valve with all the hassle you will have . $69 from Surplus .
