Off road Diesel versus #2 home heating oil

Yep!! Diesel is diesel folks.

No magic, no voodoo. #2 heating oil is slang for diesel.

ALL diesel no matter the label, color, region sold in the U.S is ULSD.

Some diesel may be cut with kerosene, or one might cut it with other additives. But it still just diesel that will heat homes, power a tractor, pick-up, or a semi.

I hate to tell those who say it's the same, maybe it is in your area, but it's not. Back in the days of sulfur it was but now that we've gone to ultra low sulfur fuel suppliers need to add a lubricating additive into the off road diesel to to prevent dame to the engine. Heating oil doesn't need it. However heating oil now gets an additive (I forgot the name) to help it burn cleaner in a furnace. Other areas could be different but you can't get a dealer to sell you HHO if they know it's going to be used in a diesel engine and vise versa. Most dealers around here only sell HHO in the winter and off road diesel in the summer. If you call them and ask for ORD they just say call xxxxx, I think they carry it, we don't. If it was the same why would any business give up a sale?

My dealer has a multi tank truck. In the winter he will flush one of his tanks about once a week and either have kerosine or ORD in it. The other 2 tanks always have heating oil in them in the winter. When he comes he uses one hose/ nozzle to fill the heating oil tank, retracts that, switches to a different nozzle and hose and fills a 55 gallon drum for my tractor. He has always charged me the same price per gallon so there would be no reason to go through all the extra work. He's not the cheapest and I often have to wait a few days before he'll have diesel on the truck but I can get both and by buying ORD in the fall it comes with antigel in it for winter use.

I'll try to upload the picture again. I don't know if you can read it, its a high res pic that you should be able to zoom in on, but I must be uploading it wrong. Anyway, its a terminal BOL that clearly indicates the products discussed here are different. It notes that heating oil will damage a diesel engine.

I know a lot of guys with tractors in the fuel industry. We all used clear or dyed ULSD. Not one would put actual heating oil in a ULSD tractor.

Feel free to do what you want with yours, though. If it doesn't ruin your motor, it wasn't heating oil.

When our heating oil is delivered it comes from the same batch as the farm diesel . Truck pumps 1500 gal into the farm diesel tank then 500gal into the house as he leaves !

We just had 550 gal delivered to our church...
500 gal for the furnace and 50 for the fuel tank...

Mikesee, quicksandfarmer, dingeryote, D7E and including me seem to get it also and the same fuel....

It's a tax sham man... that's the difference. Distributor is just trying to reinforce the sham even farther is my guess.... You will not have issues running diesel, ULSD, #2 fuel or what ever you call it, in your diesel tractor.

Now, try running straight kerosene or gas if you want issues in a diesel engine....:thumbsup:

Just a wild guess on my part, but any additive in diesel will change the BOL....wich unfortunately I still can not read even enlarged or modified

But hey, these threads are for the sake of discussion and information, Also help the sales of keyboards by wearing them out

Right. Dyed off road ULSD and #2 heating oil are both not taxed. But they are different fuels serving different purposes.

That's a distributors tax that dealers pay not a retail tax. Sure it's passed on but so is every other tax that any business pays. Besides it's the same price for "heating oil, kerosine, and other dyed diesel fuels". If you took the time to search you would have found countless news articles about a proposed tax on heating oil that got shot down quickly.
