I actually feed the deer.... They would go through more than 400lbs of feed a week if I put it out.... They were going through 60lbs a night so I had to start rationing it.
It keeps them for devouring everything else in the yard.I won't start putting feed out until next November...

Down in fairfield, the rich mucky muck area they don't have any hunting so the population is way too dense.... you'll se 15 to 20 dead on the road in a 30 mile ride.....

I had a 8 to 10pt buck at my feeder during a big snowstorm..... his nose in a normal level stance was 5.5 ft high... he was a monster.....

chris

Nice looking garden spot and compost. I have access to horse manure for compost but have not had time to go get it.

Good luck on the fence and keep posting pictures as the garden grows.

We planted 225 tomato, 90 pickling cucumber, 46 hills of straight neck squash Saturday just before the rains hit. Have several rows of peas, beans and okra planted. Will go down this afternoon to make sure it all did not wash away:eek:. Still have more to plant this week once it dries out a little.

i have not had more than like 3 squash in about 3 years. I have vine borers bad. I can sprout them and they grow fine till flowering and about the time the first one ripens the vine dies. Poison, whether its organic labled or sevin does nothing. You have to almost put sevin on daily and then why would you eat it at that rate!!! Zucchinni (spelling??) same thing. Neighbor 1 mile away, no problem was like what problem when i asked if he had any problems growing squash. No idea what the deal is. Been in my home about 5 years and had a garden in this same spot for 4 years. Does not matter if i rotate (small garden, 800sqft or so?) where in the garden the squash is same problem next year. I planted a row of zukes and will do the same with y. squash and see?? Last year planted 3x with no luck, starting in about april through juneish?

Nice job. Do you plan on taking the fence down to make your rows next year?

We have had so much rain the last couple of weeks I have not been able to get in the garden. I will be glad when this drought is over :D:(

My plan is in the fall to build fence panels for the ends. That way I can take the ends out and rototill and run the bedder through to make rows. The end posts are spaced to allow 2 rows between posts. I still have to add three wires of electric fence and a solar fence charger. I also need to cut the posts even...

My primary garden is made on fill I brought in with my FEL - with the top few feet combining dirt from creek side back sandy with rich forest soil saved from road construction. Because three sides are on a slope, I just have 3 foot fence panels up and grow Jerusalem artichokes around the lower slopes. They grow to 8 feet and the deer don't like them and can't see to jump over. Plenty of deer about (two dozen harvested on my land each year) but never had one in the garden. The side of the garden not sloped faces my paved turnaround area - and my dogs favorite haunt. My other garden several hundred yards away is similar to Cmhyland and I tried to grow some squash and corn there with little success. The shade from the tall trees - although they are 40 feet from the garden - reduced the sunlight and the sun-loving plants just fared poorly. It's now my potato and onion patch.
