Institutional Child Abuse !

Hey, they still have a choice. Instead of a choice between chick'n nuggets and hot dogs it's between broccoli and brussels sprouts.
Like they say you still get all the nutrition but without all that fat and cholesterol. Look at the statistics of overweight and obese children.
Maybe the child abuse is finally stopping.

Farmgirl19, The old 4 basic food groups has changed several times because research and the state of health in America. Each time it changes meat gets a smaller chunk and 1. Greens, 2. Grains 3. Vegetables and 4. Fruits chunk gets larger.

Just saying......

When I was in school many years ago...they gave us 2 cartons of milk with our school lunch , big chunk of Cheddar Cheese and then whatever was on the menu...and there was always a meat and it was all only .35 cents as I recall...then in high school , burger , pizza etc...very few fat kids...1960's....

The govt. has their food pyramid all wrong....High carbs and sugars found in grain, fruit, potatoes, breads, rice, pasta etc. are all bad in the quantities a vegetarian or vegan consumes them, they also contribute heavily to diabetes....protein is very important as well as good fats such as Olive oil..and then modest amounts of whole wheat, or unrefined grain and green or yellow vegetables...the beans are all full of carbs. Just my :2cents: Remember cattle are fattened with grains and even fruit...Chickens won't lay many eggs if fed too many vegetable scraps....;)

..

That is what we had in school, though I do not remember getting cheese. Breakfast was 15 cents if I remember right.

Kids are not going to eat veggies. They will go hungry instead. Another brilliant move by Nanny Bloomberg. A school or school system did this a few years ago and the kids went hungry.

As a kid, we had 32 kids in a classroom and at most 2 were fat. Today the number of overweight kids is much higher. I am suspicious of corn syrup replacing cane sugar but today we have much larger food proportions. We used to eat hamburgers with what is now a small order of fries and soda. Now you get a couple of Quarter Pounders, Whoopers, Triple burgers, a huge order of fries and drink. If you get the milk shake it is even more calories. We did not eat fast food that often as a kid but I think a many people eat out more these days. I can remember the McD's getting a drive through. The drive through makes it much easier to stop on the way home for a quick dinner when families are so much busier today.

I would guess that the other big difference between today and yesterday obesity rates is that both parents often work today as well as the large numbers of single parent families. Kids are doing more stuff today than I did as a kid which consumes limited after school time. If a parent(s) are short for time to make dinner, fast food is a fast alternative. For sure, parents are keeping a closure leash on their kids today. I used to leave the house and walk and bike all over the place for hours which burned large amounts of calories. Kids just don't get to do this like I did.

When I was a kid I lived off hot dogs for years since I refused to eat anything else. Lots of kids were and still are like I was and I can remember we ate very few veggies in school. Some boys were used to help out in the school cafeteria doing chores. One of the chores was to clean off the plates which went into garbage cans to be fed to pigs. The vast majority of the food that was thrown out was veggies.

Later,
Dan

Dan...also we did not sit around in front of computers or play with electronic games...we were outside playing, riding bikes etc. and at school we had gym class or recess on the playground in elementary school...Now days ..kids don't have that...very little exercise....I would not send my child to a school the forced them to eat vegan or vegetarian...If my child could not bring their own lunch then I would find another school or sue and take it all the way...

Bob, I might agree that growing children need protein and calcium, both available in meat and dairy products, but also available in leafy green vegetables. As we age, we need to change our diet. That's where I see people failing. They keep eating like a 10 yr-old kid into their 40s and 50s. If they make it to their 60s, they are miserable fat people with no energy and lots of medical problems. Yes, we feed cattle lots of corn and grains to fatten them up while keeping them in pens where they won't have a chance to work off that abundance of calories and carbs. The next thing that happens is a sudden 'accident' that brings about their death. I have no desire to eat the foods that make me perfect for the slaughterhouse. I suppose you could make an argument that sugar is vegetable based too. Only the makers of sodas would want you to believe that. . . and I gave up laying eggs a long time ago.;)

I agree that schools have no business trying to force children into a vegetarian or vegan diet. Unfortunately, schools have no business being the main source of nutrition for our children either. Schools are supposed to educate children, but we are allowing our schools to become responsible for rearing children. When you turn over rearing children to the schools, you have to realize that somebody else's goof-ball ideas may be forced on your kid. All the vegetarian or vegan meals in the world won't do any good if Johnny and Mary come home and drink their fill of sweet soda-pop and fill up with salty or super-sweet snacks while sitting on the couch playing video games or watching TV.

Do you remember the days when the average service station had two pumps out front and maybe a single soda machine? Inside, they probably had a gumball machine and maybe sold cracker packs or chewing gum. Now, our gas stations are complete convenience stores with every conceivable junk food in the world and a gazillion ways to ingest drinks full of artificial flavors and sweeteners. Some even have 3 or 4 microwave ovens to heat up some greasy snack made of who-knows-what. How many times per day do some kids and people eat meals out of these places. Once a day is horrible, but many people eat those 'mystery meals' two or more times per day. It's not a convenience, it's a way of life. . . er. . . death.:(

I agree Jim...I don't eat junk food and really never have but especially now in my 60's ...I still eat lean meat of all kinds and green and yellow vegetables...I love beans, bread, rice, potatoes, pasts...all of that but eat none of it since it has so many carbs...Now on the other hand , I agree with you, kids need the meat and some fat in their diet but they need to run it off too...

I am of the opinion that forcing kids to become vegans or vegetarians by only serving vegetables at school will backfire and will make them hate not only all vegetables forever but to despise school ...they will probably not eat at school like Dan suggested and will smuggle food in from the outside like prisoners....It is a horrible idea.

I agree with you...when folks allowed the schools to begin giving them something...free meals to kids, babysitting kids, etc. then they also gave up their freedom to raise their kids as they wished..

Moderation=until you are full, not 4 ounces for 99.9% of Americans.

Just saying......

I'm the prime example of the failure of the old 4 basic food groups (Along with over half of America).

Taxdon,

I love veggies, and will eat any and all. I will not argue the benefits of your diet. But I also enjoy my beef, burgers and bacon.

I too had a heart attach , January 6, 2001, 1 week before my cholesterol and triglyceride levels better than normal as was my weight and B/P. although my weight and B/P have gone up over the last few years cholesterol has been good.

But I do think it is time to address some of the real problems that cause obesity in children.

The 2 top reasons are sexual assault and child abuse. You can add neglect to the list as well.

The abuse is not in the school cafeteria nor due to the school lunch menu. The Bloomberg diet is nothing but political, who leads the charge for a vegetation diet PETA!

Unfortunately, the carbs are not in the best interest of being healthy either, IMO. And, unless one has the ability to get veggies frozen quickly, the nutrition levels begin to drop rapidly. Given the institutional way the school meals are prepared, I wouldn't count on kids getting good nutrition from a vegan/vegetarian type of diet. And again, they'd have to actually eat it, and many, if not most, won't.

I also agree with what some of the others are saying, exercise is the biggest help, in preventing the obesity epidemic, and its accompanying health problems.

As far as fattening livestock, mine run on pasture, are not penned. But, add a little grain to their knee deep, good grass diet, and their weight climbs rapidly. I do not overstock pastures, so do not need to "feed" the livestock. I let someone else worry about that, when I sell them, except for the one I will put in the freezer, and it will be just organically raised, grass fed. Takes a few months longer to get to slaughter weight, but well worth it.

I also have to wonder how much the thought of grains being "healthy and needed in increased proportions" is due to companies that have a stake in selling more grains. They have deep pockets. And to know that most of the grain we produce is shipped abroad, and that most of what we get to buy is grown in China, especially when it comes to wheat, doesn't make me confident that grains are all that good for us, anymore.

Just typing out loud, I guess.
