Price of Propane for the grill ???

I pay $9.50 -$10 at Tractor Supply. The local store here is $1.99 gal. and they are buying LP from Air Gas Supply. A weld supply store down the road from me has a sign out saying $12.50 for a refill.
Exchange tanks around here are all up to around $20.
I fill my motorhome and small tanks at TSC now.

$20 here for the exchange tanks.. It's a little cheaper at gas stations, but it's hit or miss on if they will fill them when the convenience store is busy.

$16 here in NH at a locally owned station - they fill by gallons. 4.6 or 4.7 gallons if I recall for a 20Lb tank. We have three tanks so this is last year's price in September.

We have a 100 gal tank for house use and they charge $3.50 a gallon which is high, and the neighbor who heats with Propane pays $2.59-$2.79 a gal in a 800 gal tank but he uses 800-900 gal a year.

The point is the wholesaler buys at probably $2.50 a gal so the service charge is $1 + a gallon. Not a bad profit @ 33-40% markup.

It's pretty much a rip-off I think. Filling the 500gal tank for the house was $1.49/gal the last time (cheaper now). When I built this house I stubbed out a line to the grill (with 3 inside shut-offs). Nobody will connect it to the grill. I don't care so much about cost, rather a large grill will eat a 20lb tank in about 5 meals. And 20 mile round trip to get one filled.

It's been around $16 at service stations in SW Iowa/SE Nebraska the last couple years for a 20# refill. Going to have to check TSC in Council Bluffs or Omaha. I don't remember seeing they refill, but worth asking.

Brin, I don't think it is safe to put 20 pounds of propane in a 20 pound tank; just like none of the local dealers will fill a 500 gallon tank more than 85% or so full.

Disagree about that...an empty tank will have the tare weight stamped on it (both of mine weigh 18.4 pounds empty) and a full tank will weigh 20 pounds more than the tare weight. Even with an OPD valve the tank should still hold 20 pounds 90% of the time, and the exchange tanks are a ripoff, they only put 18 pounds or so in it and charge you for 20. My vendor uses a scale when they fill my tanks, back in 8/11 they charged me $16.50 with tax for 20 pounds.

In NE Pa its been $9.95 at the local propane dealer for years. Last August I paid $1.89 a gallon for a 400 gallon pre-buy for the 12-13 heating season.

Ten for a 20lb and 60 for a 100 lb here in Ne Pa. I guess I should not complain.

How's that work??? 50 cents a pound for the small tank and 60 a pound for the large??

Better off filling 5 small tanks
