Crawfish--talk about them here

Anyone raised Crayfish in their pond? I have a 1/2 acre pond that seems to be perfect habitat but no crayfish. Several different species are found in Georgia and the DNR does not have any regulations concerning introducing them into watershed. Would I just buy a couple hundred from an online source and hope the live and reproduce or is there more to consider?

We raise them in rice fields , once the weather warms up the crawfish bury themselves in the ground and you plant the rice crop. Normally only harvest from Dec thru May. To start a new pond you have to seed it with up to 100 lbs per acre of either red or white crawfish. Red are the hardshell that are often called swamp crawfish, while the white crawfish have a softer shell that is much easier to peel and often called peelers.

M.E - Do you have any idea where we, in Georgia could order the crawfish you mentioned for seeding our ponds...like the white crawfish...the peelers ? Thanksll

Do a Louisiana low boil! Corn on the cob, potatoes, lil bit of Polish sausage, lots of crawdads, spice it all up, a great one dish meal, and it's best cooked outside, so there's no mess in the house!

Had it in New Orleans......man...that's some good eatin!!! A little beer to wash them down.....life is good!!!:drink:

I would try a local seafood market. This time of year more places are handling live crawfish to boil yourself.

Crawfish use to be cheap here till the "Yankees" found out about them. Now just like shrimp, the chinese are flooding the market with cheap crawfish.

I had no idea crawfish were being imported until I read it here on TBN. And this morning, I looked at a package of the frozen "crawfish tail meat" at Walmart and sure enough, it's labeled "Product of China" as are the frozen salmon fillets I bought.:(

They even label them with Boudreaux's or something like that but they're from china and NASTY!!!

I'd certainly rather have crawfish from Louisiana, or east Texas, but what do you know that makes you think the ones from China are nasty? Of course I've never asked about the source of their supply, but now I'd suspect the restaurants are also using crawfish from China.

An old Cajun woman showed my cousin and I how to fond them in rice patties, break 'em open, eat the tails and suck ourt the brains. I could eat the tails.
I have a good friend that was trained as chef in New Orleans and he can cook some crawfish!
